Simmonds Disappointed After Missing Olympic Standard (Video)

2016 BRITISH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS/OLYMPIC TRIALS

In the last race of the day on Friday at the 2015 British Natioanl Championships and Olympic Trials, Bath University’s Lizzie Simmonds swam 2:09.24 to win the women’s 200 backstroke. That swim was outside of both the 1st place Olympic Standard, as well as the 2% Olympic Consideration Time in the event.

After a win in the 200 back and a 2nd-place finish in the 100 back, both outside of the consideration standard, Simmonds will now rely on one of the allotted 6 magic wild-card selections by the British National Team staff to earn her spot in the Olympics. Her times, a 1:00.20 and a 2:09.24, both come in under the FINA “A” Qualifying Time, but weren’t within the much stiffer British standards.

Simmonds did say that despite missing the qualifying standard, she was happy with her swim and with winning a 2nd-straight British Championship in the event.

“It was a good swim for me tonight, a good solid swim,” Simmonds said. “Obviously, it was a little bit off the qualifying time so I’m a bit disappointed about that. It’s going to be a long anxious wait to see whether or not I make the cut for the summer games. It was a step forward from the 100 earlier in the week.”
