After ending their 2014 calendar year against Incarnate Word, Air Force, and UC San Diego, the San Diego State University women got another crack at Incarnate Word and UC San Diego to kick of their 2015 year.
On the third of January this year, the SDSU women faced off against not only Incarnate Word, but Grand Canyon University as well as UC San Diego, coming up with a win.
Against Grand Canyon they defeated them with 180 points to 106. The results was similar against Incarnate Word where they mustered up a grand total of 184 as opposed to Incarnate Word’s 107.
In the 400 medley relay the SDSU team finished first in 3:47.60. Their ‘B’ team was second overall to finish ahead of the Grand Canyon team that finished third in 3:53.82. The SDSU ‘C’ team came fourth beating out the UC San Diego squad.
The first individual event of the meet went to Alona Kyselova from Incarnate Word. She won the event in 17:03.32. Kyselova was one of the top swimmers for Incarnate Word at the meet, taking a total of three wins.
In the 200 breaststroke Kyselova beat out Emilie Campbell from San Diego State by just three one-hundredths to grab gold in 2:18.74. In the 400m IM she was a 4:21.19 to grab her third win of the competition.
In the 200 freestyle the SDSU women finished 1-2-3 with Natilee Ruiz leading the way with a 1:51.44. Finishing a close second was Whitney Weisz in 1:51.75 followed by Cori Casper who was well behind the two leaders in 1:55.68.
Anika Apostalon won the 100 backstroke over Grand Canyon University’s Iryna Glavnyk. Apostalon was a 55.19 to take the win with Glavnyk finishing second in 56.32. Galvnyk was almost three seconds ahead of third place finisher Mckenna Garfein from SDSU who rounded out the top three with a 59.03. Glavnyk went on to take gold in the 200 backstroke, winning by a sizable margin with a 2:00.78.
Apostalon would go on to take the 100 freestyle as well with a time of 50.05. In that event, the SDSU girls took the top three spots with Chelsea Bailey finishing second and Maddy Dalcamo finishing third.
That was Chelsea Bailey’s second individual medal of the meet following a first place finish in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.44.
Laura Day won the 100 breaststroke for SDSU initiating the 1-2-3 podium sweep. Day was first in a swift 1:04.67 with Emelie Campbell touching in for second in 1:05.44. Not far behind her was Lydia Pereverzina who grabbed the bronze with a 1:05.85.
Grand Canyon University’s first win came in the 200 butterfly final where Hannah Kastigar took down Frida Berggren of SDSU 2:02.63 to 2:03.13. The two were well ahead of the rest of the field with SDSU’s Loreen Whitfield finishing third in 2:09.47.
In the first diving event Alexndra Caplan of SDSU won the 1 meter with 289.55 points. She also took the 3 meter event with 324.50 points to be the only diver with over 300 points in an event.
200 freestyle bronze medallist Cori Casper took home gold in the 500 freestyle which featured another 1-2-3 sweep for the SDSU ladies. The winning time was a 5:09.35 for Casper followed by a 5:11.41 for Alex Wolf and a 5:17.03 for Cayla Jetter.
UC San Diego grabbed their first win as Naomi Thomas rocked a 58.36 100 fly over teammate Jaclyn Amog’s 59.32 to claim gold.
The last event of the meet also went to UC San Diego was they swam a 1:38.56 in the 200 freestyle relay to finish first. The UC San Diego ‘A’ team finished second in 1:38.72 holding off a charging Jovanna Koens from Grand Canyon University who touched in at 1:38.82 for bronze.
