Scott Goodrich Selected to Brazilian Worlds Squad

The Brazilian swimming blog Blog do Coach has posted today a communication by the Brazilian Federation (CBDA) officially declaring the roster for the World Championships in Barcelona at the end of July. Though there’s no new information in terms of swimmers, any additional events, or tie-breaking for the second spot in the men’s 100 free, there was one very significant addition to the coaching staff.

Scott Goodrich, the American coach of World Record holder Cesar Cielo, has been to the staff to accompany the team to the World Championships.

This is quite notable, as Brazil has been very hesitant to allow international coaches onto their staff (like many of the largest federations). Goodrich took over Cielo’s training earlier this year, and has been bringing him back from knee surgery after the Olympics.

The two have spent time training around the world, including large chunks of time in Brazil, some time at Arizona State University in the United States, and out in California for a while as well.

According to Alex Pussieldi, this is the first American National to be named to a Brazilian staff since 2000 (note that Brett Hawke was on the Brazilian 2008 Olympic staff and 2009 World Championship staff before he gained American citizenship on September 10, 2009.)

John,

Coaching experience at the places listed in addition to training together at Auburn under their sprint programs. When you are surrounded by the best in the world as he was, AND he has a coach’s mind/intuition, who he’s trained/groomed doesn’t matter much. Elite swimmers are on a pretty similar wavelength, I would think this would be a good pairing. At the very least, not a bad one, especially 3 years out from Rio. Time to experiment.

Seems like an odd choice as Cielo’s coach. What swimmers has Goodrich produced?

I didn’t know Scott Goodrich was coaching. Isn’t he about the same age as Cielo?

Yeah, Scott was coaching at ASU and then moved to coach Cielo. As Braden said, they were about a year apart at Auburn.
