Schoenmaker Rips 1:04.82 100 Breast; 5th Fastest Performer All-Time

2020 TOKYO SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES

Another Olympic record went down on day 2 heats after we saw one get overwritten already in the women’s 100m backstroke. This second mark was surpassed in the women’s 100m breaststroke and in a big way, with South Africa’s Tatjana Schoenmaker taking the top seed in the prelims with a result of 1:04.82.

Schoenmaker’s top time entering this meet rested at the South African national and African continental record of 1:05.74, a time she registered just this past May.

Here in Tokyo, the 24-year-old Tuks swimmer busted out her huge 1:04.82 by way of 30.21/34.61 to hack nearly a second off of her previous fastest outing.

Schoenmaker clocked the only sub-1:05 outing of the field, with reigning Olympic champion Lilly King of the United States taking the 3rd seed behind teammate Lydia Jacoby. Jacoby hit 1:05.52, just off her U.S. Olympic Trials time of 1:05.28 while King posted 1:05.55 here.

With two more rounds of this women’s 100m breaststroke to go, Schoenmaker already checks-in as the 5th fastest performer all-time in the event with today’s performance.
