Sanchez Doubles to Lead USC to Victory over WSU

The USC women picked up another conference victory last Thursday, picking up a win in Pac-12 action against Washington State. The Trojans won the meet handily, taking a 62-point win over the Cougars. That moves the to 4-0 for the season in dual meets and 2-0 in Pac-12 meets.

Butterfly specialist Catherine Sanchez was a major player in the win, sweeping her individual races. In the 200 fly, she trailed teammate Caitlin Tycz through the 150, but hammered home, outsplitting Tycz by over a second on the last 50, to out-touch her 1:59.95 to 2:00.06. Sanchez returned to win the 100 fly, once again outpacing Tycz to win in 54.66 to Tycz’s 55.68.

The only other swimmer of the meet to win multiple individual races was Washington State’s Emily Cook, who swept the backstroke races. In the 100 back, she came from behind to finish half a second ahead of USC backstroker Hannah Weiss, 55.23 to 55.83. She completed the sweep in the 200 back, taking the lead from USC’s Abigail Miller (2:02.64) after the 1st 50 and building her lead to finish in 2:00.96.

Sophomore Catherine Sanchez won the 100y and 200y butterfly to lead the No. 4 USC women’s swimming and diving team to a 162-100 victory Thursday night (Oct. 26) at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center.

USC improved to 4-0 on the season, 2-0 in the Pac-12.

Troy opened the meet with a 1-2 in the 400y medley relay as sophomore Louise Hansson, freshman Maggie Aroesty, Sanchez and senior Lexie Malazdrewicz took first in 3:41.78.

Sophomore Becca Mann won the 1000y free in 10:02.99 with junior Elizabeth Stinson second (10:07.16) and freshman Isabella Rongione third (10:11.70). Both Mann and Rongione were in Hong Kong last week representing the U.S. at a FINA Grand Prix Open Water 10km race.

Juniors Tatum Wade (1:51.26) and Allie Wooden (1:52.17) followed the 1000 with another 1-2 in the 200y free.

Washington State next won consecutive events as Emily Cook captured the 100y back (55.23) with USC’s Hannah Weiss second (55.83) and Cougar Clothilde Peseux then took the 100y breast (1:04.45), touching just ahead of USC junior Kirsten Vose (1:04.57).

Sanchez won the first of her two events with a 1:59.95 in the 200y fly, edging freshman teammate Caitlin Tycz (2:00.06). The duo would later go 1-2 again in the 100y fly, Sanchez winning in 54.66 to Tycz’s 55.68. Both times were season-bests for Sanchez.

Freshman Marta Ciesla sprinted to a win in the 50y free with a 23.17 before the first break and was followed after the 10-minute respite by senior Lexie Malazdrewicz‘s first in the 100y free (51.09).

Cook won her second event and Washington State’s third overall with a 2:00.96 in the 200y back, leading a 1-2 finish.

Vose won the 200y breast in 2:16.63 with Wade third (2:23.42). Wooden found the winner’s circle in the 500y free in her first race in the event this year with a 4:58.64, holding off Cougar Ryan Falk, who posted a 4:59.30. Stinson was third (5:01.34).

Following Sanchez’s second fly win, the Cougars won the 400y IM with Jasmine Margetts’ 4:20.87. USC’s Rongione was second (4:29.82).

USC closed the meet with a win in the 200y free relay as Sanchez, junior Victoria Toris, Tycz and Vose won in 1:34.28.

PRESS RELEASE – WASHINGTON STATE:

LOS ANGELES – Washington State University fell to Pac-12 Conference foe No. 7 USC 162-100 Thursday evening. The Cougars took home four individual victories, with newcomers Emily Cook and Clothilde Peseux taking three along with junior Jasmine Margetts.

“We swam strong tonight, very gutsy performances all around,” head coach Tom Jager said. “Emily (Cook) was impressive tonight and swam very disciplined races. I was very proud of our Cougs tonight. They swam with a lot of heart.”

Freshman Emily Cook continues to perform well in her rookie season. Cook took first in two individual events and was a member of the third place 400 Medley Relay team. Alongside teammates Clothilde PeseuxAnna Brolin, and Hannah Bruggman, the team was able to clock in at 3:46.24, merely four seconds behind second place from USC. Cook’s individual wins came in the 100 and 200 back. She clocked in at 55.23, nearly one second faster than the second place finisher. Cook finished the 200 back with a season best time of 2:00.96 for first place, just ahead of teammate Taylor McCoy who clocked in at 2:02.40. Cook’s time in the 200 back is the tenth fastest in program history.

Juniors Jasmine Margetts and Clothilde Peseux earned first place finishes as well. Margetts clocked in at 4:20.87 for first in the 400 IM, while teammate Peseux took third with a time of 4:31.33. Peseux claimed the 100 breast with a season best time of 1:04.45.

Hannah Bruggman also swam well for the Cougars. She took second place in both the 50 free and 100 free. Bruggman finished the 50 free with a season best time of 23.25. She also clocked in at 51.73 in the 100 free.

The Cougars continue their road trip Saturday with a stop at UCLA beginning at 11 a.m.
