San Jose State Triumphs Over CSU Bakersfield

Earlier this morning, the women of San Jose State University picked up a win against the women’s team of California State University – Bakersfield. The two teams met for the competition in Bakersfield, California for both teams’ return to competition after the holiday season and the first meet of the new year. One of the highlights of the meet was Michaela Page’s return to competition and 200 freestyle win for the Roadrunners after being out for an injury. Here is an event-by-event recap of the meet:

200 Medley Relay
San Jose State racked up major points in the 200 medley relay when their A and B relays went 1-2 at the finish. The A relay of Morgan McCormic, Jen Johnson, Michaela McLean, and Brynne Beneke touched first in 1:47.25, followed by the B relay made up of Haley Smith, Taylor Solorio, Cassidy Robinson, and Christina Bruni (1:49.13). Bakersfield’s A relay took third.

1000 Freestyle
In the longest event of the night, Riley Spitzer of San Jose State posted the top time (10:24.19). The next four finishers in the event were from San Jose State: Delise Batiza (10:32.40), Allyson Fellows (10:40.35), and Colleen Humel (10:47.60).

200 Freestyle
Michaela Paige of Bakersfield took the win in the 200 freestyle. Her time of 1:51.45 was almost two seconds ahead of the next competitor, Alli Davis (1:53.27) of San Jose State. Davis’s teammate Brooke Hammond finished third in 1:54.43, barely touching out Kelsey Lange of Bakersfield (1:54.56).

100 Backstroke
Morgan McCormick of San Jose State won the 100 backstroke in a time of 57.76, followed by Paula Hernandez of Bakersfield. San Jose State’s Michaela McLean touched just after Hernandez in 58.24.

100 Breaststroke
San Jose State’s Dominique Yoder touched first in the 100 breaststroke. Her time of 1:06.20 was just faster than her teammate Jen Johnson (1:06.45). Third place belonged to Dylana Milobar of Bakersfield in 1:07.50.

200 Butterfly
There were only three swimmers who competed in the 200 butterfly event. Kayla Nakamoto of San Jose State won in 2:08.04 and was chased by Bakersfield’s Lucy Sanderson (2:14.90) and Audrey Willoughby (2:25.03).

50 Freestyle
Lauren Kaufman of Bakersfield took first place in a time of 24.29, ahead of San Jose State’s Brynne Beneke (24.41) and Taylor Solorio (24.53).

100 Freestyle
Taylor Solorio of San Jose State and Paola Hernandez of Bakersfield shared the win in the 100 freestyle. The girls tied in a time of 52.44. In third was Brynne Beneke of San Jose State in 53.34.

200 Backstroke
Following up her win in the 100 Backstroke, Morgan McCormick also won the 200 Backstroke event in 2:05.67, three seconds ahead of the competition. Colleen Humel of San Jose State claimed second in a time of 2:08.80. Humel’s teammate Haley Smith rounded out the top three in 2:10.02.

200 Breaststroke
The 200 Breaststroke was a close race between Amanda Buxbaum and Michelle Berry, both from San Jose State, and Dylana Milobar of Bakersfield. Buxbaum ended up winning the event in 2:24.23, less than a second ahead of Milobar (2:24.52) and Berry (2:24.69).

500 Freestyle
San Jose State’s Riley Spitser touched the wall in 5:03.65, winning the women’s 500 freestyle event. A pair of San Jose State swimmers, Michaela Paige and Delise Batiza, finished second and third. Their times were 5:06.92 and 5:12.92, respectively.

100 Butterfly
Michaela McLean of San Jose State won the 100 butterfly in 57.31, touching out Paola Hernandez of Bakersfield (57.47). San Jose State’s Kayla Nakamoto finished third in 58.62, about a second behind Hernandez.

200 IM
In the 200 IM, Morgan McCormick of San Jose State touched the wall in 2:09.82, well ahead of the rest of the field. McCormick’s teammates Alli Davis and Haley Smith raced to the finish, with Davis coming in second (2:12.30) and Smith taking third (2:12.45).

200 Freestyle Relay
San Jose State’s A relay of Taylor Solorio, Brynne Beneke, Amber Nelson, and Riley Spitser won the 200 freestyle relay event in 1:36.82. Bakerfield’s A relay of Paola Hernandez, Lauren Kaufman, Kelsey Lange, and Chrisy Vo were two seconds behind, finishing second in 1:38.54.

The final score of the meet was as follows:

San Jose State University – 199.5
CSU Bakersfield – 97.5

The CSU Bakersfield women will face more competition next week (January 6th) when they join the men’s team in a meet against UNLV and Fresno State (women only). San Jose State is swimming at the USD Relay meet on Saturday, January 3rd, and at UC San Diego on Sunday, January 4th.
