Sam Schutt triples as South Dakota women beat Omaha

The South Dakota Lady Coyotes took care of business Thursday night against the University of Nebraska – Omaha, rolling to a 165.5-134.5 win.

Sam Schutt, already a two-time Summit League Swimmer of the Week for USD this season, won three individual races to power the victory.

Schutt won the 200 free early on – South Dakota tends to swim its home meets in short course meters, so Schutt won in 2:07.44. She would go on to take the 100 free (58.67) and 400 free (4:29.95) and also led off South Dakota’s winning 400 free relay in 59.24.

Joining her on that relay were Tayler Kirtley, Kellee Lekavy and Emily Lundstrom, and the team went 4:02.28.

South Dakota also went 1-2 in the 200 medley relay to open the meet. Kirtley, Kassidy Cornell, Hannah Veselik and Allie Pfauth were 2:04.30 to take the top spot.

But despite all that, Omaha stayed in contention by getting three individual wins from Morgan Stepp. Stepp took the first individual race, going 9:21.46 in the 800 free. She came back late in the meet to win the 200 breast (2:42.48) and the 200 IM (2:26.44).

Another big contributor for UNO was Jenna Foiles, who swept the butterfly races. Her 2:25.71 won the 200 fly early on, and she added a 1:05.74 win in the 100 fly as the meet started to wind down.

Omaha’s other win came in the 200 back, where Hilary Schieffer beat out 100 back winner Tayler Kirtley for the event win in 2:27.22.

Kirtley was tough in all of her other races, though. In addition to helping both of the aforementioned relays win, Kirtley also took the 100 back in 1:08.26.

USD also got a pair of diving wins from Greysen Hertting, who swept the first three Summit League Diver of the Week awards this year. Hertting continued to be fantastic, scoring 249.90 on 1-meter and 265.95 on 3-meter for the Coyotes.

Other winners for South Dakota were Kassidie Cornell (100 breast, 1::16.87) and Kellee Lekavy (50 free, 27.33) each of whom complemented relay wins with individual titles.
