Rio Torch Relay Day 79: Campinas, Limeira, Rio Claro & Americana

On each day of the official Olympic torch relay, carrying the Olympic flame to the Olympic cauldron in Rio de Janeiro, the Rio2016 Facbeook page is posting brilliant and spectacular images from one of the world’s unique and most beautiful landscapes. Each day until August 5th, we will bring you these stunning images.

On the 79th day of the Olympic torch relay the torch continued through the state of São Paulo, hitting four more cities.

It began in Campinas and travelled about 40 km north west on the day to end up in Americana. Campinas is the third most populous city in the state eclipsing over one million inhabitants. The city’s metropolitan area contains twenty municipalities with a total population of nearly three million. The biggest tourist attractions in the city are known as the seven wonders of Campinas, voted by readers of a local newspaper. The wonders include the Metropolitan Cathedral and Lagoa do Taquaral (an area for leisure and sport activities).

The torch then went through Limeira, a city with 300,000 people that was previously known as the “Brazilian Orange Capital” due to its large citrus production. Now the main crop cultivated from Limeira is sugar cane. It is also recognized for their jewelry which attracts customers from across the globe.

The torch continued through Rio Claro before finishing up the day in Americana. Rio Claro is a municipality in São Paulo, not to be confused with the Claro River in the state of Goias. It is home to over 178,000. Americana is known for the Pedagogic Historical Museum and the Contemporary Art Museum.
