Multiple School Records and Pool Records fell as the Drexel men and women swam in their winter invite this weekend. The women’s 1000 free saw the School Record and Pool Record go down, as freshman Maddie Riley swam to a 10:06.40. That was her first time under 10:10 and a lifetime best by nearly 4 seconds. Teammate Alicia Diaz also set a School Record and Pool Record with her 55.34 in the 100 fly. That was a lifetime best by 2 seconds.
Alexa Kutch, a 2018 NCAA qualifier for Drexel, won the 200 back in a new Pool Record of 1:56.20. Kutch is the reigning CAA Champion and CAA Record holder in both backstrokes. She was within 3 tenths of her season best. Kutch is currently ranked 55th in the nation in the 200 back and 60th in the 100 back with her season best 53.34. Her lifetime bests are 52.48 and 1:53.46. Last season, it took a 52.46 in the 100 back and a 1:54.01 in the 200 back to qualify for NCAAs.
On the men’s side, Jason Arthur took down a Pool Record in the 100 breast, winning in 55.54. That was his first time breaking 56 seconds and his first best time in the event since 2018. Arthur is typically known for his backstroke talents, as he’s the reigning CAA Champion in the 200 back. Teammate Stathis Malamas set a Pool Record as he won the 200 free in 1:39.59.

PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving hosted West Chester University and some members of the Seton Hall Swimming and Diving teams for the Drexel Winter Invite on Friday night. The Dragons set multiple pool and team records at the event.
Stathis Malamas set the pool record in the 200 free by touching the wall in 1:39.59. Malamas was the also first swimmer in the 400 free relay team that included Kevin Spear, Spencer Hill and Paris Raptis. The team finished the race in 3:03.26.
Jason Arthur broke the pool record in the 100 breast at 55.54.
Maddie Riley set the team record and pool record in the 1000 free with a time of 10:06.40. Alicia Diaz set both a team record and a pool record in the 100 fly with a time of 55.34. Alexa Kutch set a pool record with a time of 1:56.20 in the 200 back. Gabrielle Rudy broke a pool record in the 100 breast, finishing with a time of 1:01.86.
The women’s 400 free relay team made up of Rudy, Diaz, Paige Powell and Kutch set a new pool record by finishing with a time of 3:03.26.
In the 1-meter dive, Katie Caputo and Becca Demaree both posted qualifying times for NCAA Zones. Caputo qualified with a score of 270.15 while Demaree recorded a score of 278.02. The NCAA Diving Zone A Championships will take place from March 2-4.
NEXT UP
Both teams now will head to Christiansburg, Va. to compete in the 2020 Colonial Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships. The conference championships are scheduled to run from Wednesday, Feb. 19 through Saturday Feb. 22.
