Relay Records Highlight First Night Of 2014 NCSA Junior National Championships

Tuesday was the first day of the 2014 NCSA Summer Junior National Championships at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana. It was a relatively light day, with only one individual event and the sprint relays.

Hanna Huston from the Katy Aquatic Team For Youth won the only individual event of the day with her time of 8:51.01 in the women’s 800 meter freestyle. She dropped more than ten seconds from her seed time to win the event. Kelsey Vetalice finished second with her time of 8:52.22. Vetalice touched out Taylor Pike, the third place finisher at 8:52.40.

The women’s 200 freestyle relay was very exciting, as three teams touched under the previous record time. The relay team from Nation’s Capital Swim Club of Hannah Baker, Katelyn Mack, Jasemine Hellmer, and Robyn Dryer combined to touch the wall at 1:46.26, breaking the previous meet record set last year by Northbay Aquatics at 1:46.91. Academy Bullets Swim Club finished second at 1:46.66 and Lakeside Swim Team finished third at 1:46.87.

Nation’s Capital made a statement, breaking the second relay record of the day in the women’s 200 medley relay. The team of Carrie Boone, Natalie Purnell, Andi Mack, and Hannah Baker finished with their time of 1:57.62, beating the previous record of 1:57.77 set last year by Nothbay Aquatics. St. Corix Swim Club finished second at 1:58:67.

North Bay Aquatics followed suit, tying the men’s 200 freestyle relay meet record. The relay of Nicholas Bigot, Stefan Krenenburg, Sheldon Boboff, and Peter Lewczyk posted the winning time of 1:35.57, tying the previous record set last year by CATS Aquatic Team. Nation’s Capital finished second with their time of 1:35.89.

The final event of the day, the men’s 200 medley relay, was won by the Jersey Wahoos with their time of 1:46.31. Finishing in second place was the Academy Bullets at 1:46.56.
