MEN’S 200 BREAST FINALS
- Reece Whitley (Cal) – 1:51.02
- Max McHugh (Minnesota) – 1:51.62
- Caspar Corbeau (Texas) – 1:52.06
Reece Whitley took this one, becoming the new national leader this season. He nearly went under 1:51, winning at 1:51.02 with Minnesota’s Max McHugh taking second in 1;51.62 and Texas freshman Caspar Corbeau again going a lifetime best for third (1:52.06).
Braden Vines of Texas was 1:52.28 for fourth, followed closely by Michigan seniors Tommy Cope (1:52.31) and Jeremy Babinet (1:52.52). All top six finishers went under the NCAA ‘A’ cut.
Michigan’s Charlie Swanson clocked a 1:53.57 to claim the B-final.
Just hope they watch for dolphin kicks into the walls in breaststroke events.
I thought Cal swam pretty well considering. They did not look rested at all. They will be on point and ready to go when NCAA’s rolls around. That is a tight knit group of guys. Lots of smiles and good vibes from the Golden Bears on the pool deck this weekend. It will be great to seem them firing on all cylinders when the time comes.
McHugh only got shot this summer. Extra rest right there too
I think Cal had some rest. If you remember, 2016 they had a group of guys miss their conference meet to swim a LCM meet. I wouldn’t be surprised if they rested here to ensure some NCAA qualifying times with the intent to skip their conference meet later on in the season. Big players like Whitley and Hoffer probably did this.
Yeah, but what about Hugo Gonzalez? I dont think he has an invite time yet…

He doesn’t have a time yet that would have been invited in 2019.
Also – there’s no overlapping PSS this season. Des Moines is the week after Pac-12s.
I don’t think Cal was fully rested as a team, if they were then they are in trouble. It seems like they held back.
Where are they in qualifying. Texas has something crazy like 19 guys under last years invite times. A vast majority in multiple events.
In the history of competitive swimming nobody has ever admitted to resting for a meet. It has literally never happened.
Hmm. I bet Texas was more rested than Cal. Cal is going to be much faster in March. This repeats every year. I just think Texas’ depth will be the deciding factor. Texas wins! Every swimmer Texas takes to NCAAs will score and 4-5 will stay home.
The Texas guys were lifting weights in the ready room before each event & ran through the Minnesota wintery streets to & from the pool from their hotel. No rest whatsoever.
Lol. No rest whatsoever, huh? They either rested or Eddie is running USRPT practices this Fall (less likely than running wintery streets of Minnesota). They rested some as they do every December. BTW, I hope they did not lift in the ready room before each event – that would be very disappointing to this fan.

Last years freshman class was to be a top 5 team and this years freshman class is a top five team that means the juniors and seniors can stay home.
