Race Video: Ryan Held Swims 18.68 in the 50 Free

2017 MEN’S ACC SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

On day 2 of the 2017 ACC Championships, Ryan Held swam an 18.68 in the 50 free final that makes him the 7th-fastest swimmer in the history of the event.

Former University of Delaware swimmer Jake Magnan was perched mid-pool, and had the perfect vantage point to capture the entire swim start-to-finish, and has been kind enough to share that swim with the rest of the world through his Twitter account.

My prediction is first person to take down Dressel will be Ryan Hoffer next year at NCAAs. His 18.71 looked like he was on cruise control. 7 strokes down, 8 back. I think he will rewrite all the sprint free records.

18.6 stil a Watsnabe away from 18.2 but he could give Dressel a run for hus money in a month. I’d almost — but not quite — PAY to see that race in person plus see Murphngo,sub-43.0/1:35.0.

Once Held is tapered, he may be able to stay under and keep his speed until the second 15 meter mark.
He came up about 2 kicks early, which could be the difference between him actually taking down King Dressel.
What a way to go out that would be…

Both dressel and held are juniors? So they have another year and don’t need a great way to go out yet haha

WOW… I was sure he was a senior. My bad.
These boys are young, and it makes me feel a bit old.

Interesting development this year – looking at the NCAA rankings in the 50 free, there are only 3-4 foreigners in the top 10. Schooling (3rd), Khalafalla (5), Sendyk (10), and Shane Ryan (6).
The 50 free has been pretty full of foreigners for the last decade.

Adrian and Dressel were the only two Americans in the top 10 all-time at the beginning of this season. Now Held and Hoffer are on the list, and Powers is almost top 10.

I would not call Shane Ryan a foreigner. He might represent Ireland, but he was born and raised in the US

Well you could make the same argument for Schooling. Went to Bolles in Fl, now Texas

If Schooling races this at NCAAs it’ll be quite the battle for second. With him, Held and maybe Powers vying for the spot. Would also love to see someone give Dressel a run for his money, but I just can’t see them getting below 18.30 which it would almost most certainly take to beat dressel.

Schooling is not racing the 50 free at NCs. I’m pretty sure they were just deciding the order of their 200 free and who would anchor the 200 medley.

I remember being there to see him go 19.76 and break the Illinois state record and thinking that was absurd. He went more than a second faster than that here. I think the big difference maker was definitely his start and turn, they were not the best when he was in high school.
