12-year old Destin Lasco broke the National Age Group Record in the 200 yard backstroke on Friday night, and thanks to his coach Dimitar Petrov, above is a video of his swim.
What’s really impressive about Lasco is how relaxed he looks. That relaxed look is what we always hear the great backstrokers have, but it isn’t until you see it up close and personal, it’s hard to really comprehend just how fast some of these guys can go with what looks like such little effort.

One of the things I think about when I look at kids like him and the other amazing swimmers in Mid Atlantic is that they really should start training at LCM pool as soo as they turn 13. If you look at the NAG records barely any SCY record holders make the Olympic Team because when they transition to LCM its too late and too difficult for them. Even look at someone like Caleab Dressel…he is all time fastest in 50 yard free but sits second now at 50 LCM. If we get these kids at 13 training in the right pool they will have an advantage. Kristie – I caution you before saying that “barely any” SCY National Age Group Record holders have made the Olympic Team. Anthony Ervin, Tom Jaeger, Nathan Adrian, Matt Grevers, and Robin Leamy, for example, are all SCY National Age Group Record holders for and have all made the Olympic Team, and those are just guys who are record holders in the 50 and the 100 free for 17-18’s. In other events, the list gets even huger, including guys like Phelps, Jorgensen, Goodell, Dalbey, Oppel, Seager…in fact, as I look at the list of all 17-18 NAG Record holders, it appears as though more made it to the Olympics than didn’t.
He just broke the 100 back record a 52.32. Underwater first two lengths close to limit last just past middle. The underwaters are fast. A natural talent.
Destin swam a 1:46+ 299 free before his 200 back. He is average hieght and has an amazing stroke length since he was 8 on a zone 10 and under Al star tem. It looks effortless.
No backyard pool just talent.
Scary fact. Destin’s 200 back as a 12 year old is almost as fast as Michael Phelps’ 200 back as a FOURTEEN year old. That’s crazy right?
Phelps qualified for the Olympic team in the 200 back as a 19-year-old in 2004 (scratched to focus on 200 free). Destin will be 19 in 2020, should be ready by then.
The most impressive thing is that he broke the record after swimming on the same night a 200 free and a 100 IM!

Destin Lasco and Vinny Marciono are likely 6’4″ and have pools in their backyards. The question is, “do they have a long course meters or short course yards pool in their back yards?”
