Queens and Wingate Split in Tight Top-Ten Division II Action

The Queens University of Charlotte swim program hosted Bluegrass Mountain Conference rival Wingate University today in the pool at the Levine Center for Wellness and Recreation. In a heated dual meet the Royals women were able to beat the Bulldogs 123-122, while the men lost by the score of 105-140.

Women’s Meet (#2 Queens (N.C.) 123, #3 Wingate 122)

The women’s meet was tough fought battle on both sides of the pool coming down the to the final event of the night, the 800 Free Relay, to determine the winner.   Queens sophomore Caroline Arakelian opened the race with a 1:52.67, an NCAA Division II “B” cut) to help the Royals post a victorious 7:49.37. Wingate’s quartet was second with a time of 7:59.65.

Wingate sophomores Ana Fish and Olga Kosheleva won two events each for the visiting Bulldogs. Fish won the 50 Freestyle in 24.64) and the 100 Freestyle in 54.21.  Kosheleva claimed gold medals in the 100 Breaststroke with a 1:06.93 and the 200 Breaststroke in a 2:26.06).  Bulldog senior Katie Pheil and redshirt sophomore Julie Wessler earned one individual victory each. Pheil touched first in the 200 Freestyle in a 1:52.27, while Wessler endured for triumph in the 1000 Freestyle with a 10:32.09.

Hannah Peiffer of Queens won the 100 backstroke and the 100 Butterfly in the B-cut times of 57.30 and 57.19 respectively. Peiffer also picked up another victory and B-cut later in the race when she took the 200 Butterfly in the time of 2:07.04.  Arakelian picked up another pair of wins when she finished the 200 IM in the time of 2:06.08, and the 200 Backstroke in 2:00.23.  Lillian Gordy also picked up a win for the Royals in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5:08.96.

Men’s Meet (#2 Wingate men 140, #4 Queens (N.C.) 105)

Harry Traystman started off the meet for the Royals when he took first place in the 100 Backstroke in the time of 51.55. Following him were Niclas Eriksson with a win the 100 Breaststroke, and Matthew Josa who blew away the competition in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 47.91.  Josa’s time was not only a NCAA-A cut, but also a Queens School record.  That time also puts him a-top Division II in that event by almost a full 2 seconds.  Josa also turned in a NCAA-B cut when he won the 200 Backstroke in a 1:48.93.

The Royals also picked up a slew of second places finishes with Alex Menke in the 1000 freestyle, Felipe de Oliveira in the 200 freestyle, Eriksson in the 50 freestyle, Christian Yeatts in the 200 butterfly, and Hayden Kosater in the 100 freestyle.

Wingate senior Marko Blazevski won three events, while sophomore Dylon Johnson claimed two gold medals for the victorious Bulldogs.  Blazevski touched first in the 1000 Freestyle in a 9:33.19, the 200 IM in a 1:53.70 and the 500 Freestyle with a time of 4:39.85. Johnson was triumphant in the 200 Freestyle with a 1:42.96 and the 100 Freestyle in a time of 47.45.

Senior Reed Miller picked up a victory in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 21.42.  Sophomore Roman Kanyuka won the 200 Breaststroke in a 2:04.67 while freshman Evan Kovolich picked up a victory in the 200 Butterfly with a time of 1:53.98.
