Pinheiros Overtakes Minas in Team Standings at Brazil Trophy – Day 3

Night three of the 2018 Brazil Trophy, formerly known as the Maria Lenk Trophy, featured finals for the 100 free, 200 fly, 50 breast, and 50 back.

Pinheiros’ Larissa Oliveira was the only woman under :55 in the 100 free, winning in 54.53. Her teammate Manuella Lyrio was second in 55.19, and SESI-SP’s Daynara de Paula was third in 55.44. In the men’s race, Minas’ Bruno Fratus opened in a blazing fast 22.47, but ended up 5th in 48.68. Pinheiros’ Gabriel Santos won gold in 47.98 — his first time under :48. His teammate Pedro Spajari took second in 48.01, and Minas’ Marco Ferreira was third in 48.46 — his first time under :49. In fourth was Marcelo Chierighini in 48.48, qualifying him as a member of the 2018 Pan Pacific Championship relay squad. Also of note: 19-year-old Breno Correia (Pinheiros) finished in sixth with a 48.78.

In the women’s 200 fly, Giovanna Diamante (Pinheiros) took gold with a personal best of 2:12.07, over two seconds faster than her previous best. She took third in the 100 fly earlier in the meet after dropping half a second (59.38). Corinthians’ Virginia Martin was second in 2:13.05, and Flamengo’s Nathalia Almeida third in 2:15.33. Unisanta’s Leonardo de Deus, despite being under the weather, won the men’s race in 1:55.05. Pinheiros’ Luiz Melo was second in 1:55.92, and Corinthians’ Kaue Carvalho third in 1:56.76. Notably, Vini Lanza took the race out in a field-leading 24.97, but could not hold on and took fifth in 1:58.10.

Ruta Meilutyte, representing Flamengo, got off to a good start in the 50 breast, but ended up taking silver in 30.75, behind Pinheiro’s Jhennifer Conceição in 30.64. Minas’ Renata Sander was third in 31.10. In the men’s race, Pinheiros’ João Gomes out-touched Minas’ Felipe Lima, 26.85 to 26.87. Unisanta’s Felipe Silva was third in 27.04.

Dutch swimmer Kira Touissant (Minas) did what she was recruited to do in the 50 back, winning in 28.11. Unisanta’s Andrea Berrino took second in 28.26, and Curitibano’s Fernanda Goeij was third in 28.92. In the men’s race, Guilherme Guido (Pinheiros) led the entire way, winning in 25.00. Minas’ Gabriel Fantoni, who swims for the University of Indiana, took second in 25.14. Pinheiros’ Guilherme Basseto was third in 25.24. Cesar Cielo, who was third heading into finals, took 5th in 25.60 after hitting the lane line several times.

Team Scores

Pinheiros had a stellar day three, overtaking Minas for the lead. After day two, Minas led the point-scoring with 1,024, followed by Pinheiros with 975 and Unisanta with 628.
