The final day of the 2018 RBC Canadian National Championships saw some familiar faces pick up gold medals, as Sydney PickremAlexander Pratt and Mackenzie Padington all added to their collection with their third titles of the meet. We also saw national team veteran Richard Funk pick himself up a win after a near miss earlier in the weekend.

Pickrem won her third gold of the meet in the 100 breast, adding to her haul of golds that she won earlier in both the 200 breast and 200 IM. Pickrem came in in a time of 1:07.90, a personal best. Avery Wiseman of the Triton Swim Club placed 2nd in 1:08.46, and Nina Kucheran of Sudbury Laurentian Swim Club was 3rd in 1:09.27. Both swimmers were named to the Youth Olympic Games and Junior Pan Pac rosters at the end of the meet.

In the men’s event, Funk won in a time of 1:00.95, a step in the right direction as he’ll aim to qualify for the Pan Pacific Championships later in the summer. Gabe Mastromatteo of Kenora, a joint winner with Alexander Milanovich in the 50 breast, finished 2nd in 1:01.44. Milanovich ended up 4th in this event, and both swimmers were also named to the Youth Olympic and Junior Pan Pac rosters.

Padington, having won the 200 and 800 free on day 1, added a third gold with a win in the 100 free (55.77). Kyla Leibel (55.95) and Aleksa Gold (56.09) were 2nd and 3rd. Stephen Calkins topped the men’s race in 50.10, followed by Owen Daly (50.35) and Alexander Pratt (50.42). Pratt, who won the 200 and 400 earlier, added another gold in the 800 on day 4 as well. He clocked 8:08.20 to top Island’s Josh Zakala (8:10.63) and Cascade teammate Alexander Katelnikoff (8:10.83).
