Three athletes who medalled at the BHP Billiton Aquatic Super Series decided to stay in Perth a few days longer to compete at the SWA State Championships. Leiston Pickett and Chris Wright who won the 50 breaststroke and 100 butterfly respectively at the super series walked away with multiple wins at the state Championships.
Pickett won the 50 breaststroke in a time of 31.99 and the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:09.15 while Wright won the 100 butterfly in a time of 53.87 and the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:00.84, but posted a faster time in the semi final of 1:59.97.
Brenton Rickard who collected silver in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke along with a bronze in the 50 breaststroke at the super series, won the state championship in the 50, but not without a fight.
The Commonwealth gold medallist was challenged by 18 year old Robert Evans who just missed catching Rickard in the last few meters of the race. Rickard finished in a time of 28.68 followed by Evans who posted a time of 28.88.
“I swam well in the semi and went 28.2 but I probably rushed it and tried a bit hard tonight”, Rickard said, whose prelim time was just off the 28.02 he swam at the super series.
“I’m a bit fatigued after a busy weekend at the BHP Billiton Aquatic Super Series and a few races over the past couple of days.”
