Not only did they claim gold in the event, but the Pepperdine women also took out a 14-year-old school record in the event set by the quartet of McLeod, Kimmel, Nightingale, and Wilson back in 2007 when they swam a 3:51.92.

Pepperdine made it 2-for-2 relay wins on day 1 of the meet as Sammie Slater (24.21), McKenzie Kelly (24.20), Jasmine Williams (23.70), and Jenna Sanchez (23.08) swam to a 1:35.19 gold medal performance. That was enough to beat out Biola’s silver medal-winning contingent who came in with a 1:35.48 and Concordia’s bronze medal-winning 1:38.04.

Along with her contribution to the 400 medley relay win, Pepperdine’s Emily Morton topped the podium in the 200 IM by hitting a 2:05.94 to shave over half a second off her 2:06.66 PB from 2019. Morton was followed in the event by the Biola University duo of Liza Parahnevich (2:06.91) and Katelyn Harper (2:07.85).

In the women’s 50 freestyle, Biola’s Meghan Tolman swam a winning time of 23.80 to out-touch Pepperdine’s Jenna Sanchez who was a 23.95 for silver. McKenzie Kelly rounded out the top three with a 24.15 for Pepperdine. Tolman’s teammate from Biola Kolya Vos managed to win the 500 freestyle on day 1 with a 5:01.63 which is a full 10 seconds faster than her previous best time in the event of 5:11.79 from 2019. The swim for Benjamin made him the only one in the field under 4:30 as Taylor Steffen, also from Concordia posted a 4:33.88 for silver while Biola’s Gabe Webber trailed with a 4:40.72 for bronze.

Improving upon their teammate’s bronze medal performance, Patrick Waggoner and Nathan Schwantes went 1-2 for Biola in the men’s 200 IM with swims of 1:52.36 and 1:55.53, respectively. The swim for Waggoner is a decent PB in the event, improving upon his 1:54.06 from last year’s championships while Schwantes also dropped time from his 2019 swim of 1:56.46.
