Swimmer of the Week

Kaelan Freund, Penn State

So. – Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada – Chinook

  • Recorded an NCAA B Standard qualifying time in the 100 breaststroke (54.20), the fastest 100 breaststroke time in the nation this season
  • Placed first in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke (2:00.34), as well as the 200 IM (1:49.71) and the 200 medley relay (1:28.91) in Penn State’s dual meet against Virginia
  • Earns his first career Swimmer of the Week honor
  • Last Penn State Swimmer of the Week: Shane Ryan (Jan. 25, 2017)

Diver of the Week

Steele Johnson, Purdue

Jr. – Carmel, Ind. – Laurel Springs

  • Earned two first place finishes in Purdue’s dual meet at Miami (Ohio)
  • Recorded NCAA zone qualifying marks in the 1- and 3-meter events scoring 321.30 and 344.78, respectively
  • Earns his 13th Diver of the Week award and the first of the season
  • Last Purdue Diver of the Week: Steele Johnson (Jan. 25, 2017)

 

Freshman of the Week

Ryan Lawrence, Purdue

Birmingham, Mich. – Seaholm

  • Place first in all three of his events in the Boilermaker’s dual against Miami (Ohio)
  • Won the 50 freestyle in 21.40, and took first in the 200 medley relay (1:32.08) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:05.07)
  • Earns his first Freshman of the Week award
  • Last Purdue Freshman of the Week: Brandon Loschiavo (Dec. 23, 2016)

Jr. – Hong Kong – St. Paul’s Secondary School

• Recorded two NCAA A Standard qualifying times in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle at 47.22 and 1:42.44, respectively, and a first-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay (7:00.71)
• Lowered her own school record in the 100-yard freestyle and currently holds the second-fastest time in the nation in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle and the third-fastest time in the 200 breaststroke (2:08.92)
• Earns her fifth career Swimmer of the Week and the second of the season
• Last Michigan Swimmer of the Week: Siobhan Haughey (Oct. 4, 2017)

Diver of the Week
Morgan Wellenzohn, Michigan State
Jr. – Amherst, N.Y. – Orchard Park

• Placed seventh in Michigan State’s meet against Notre Dame and Texas A&M
• The 2016-17 Academic All-Big Ten honoree scored 256.80 in the 3-meter diving event
• Earns her first career Diver of the Week award
• Last Michigan State Diver of the Week: Madeline Sewell (Oct. 28, 2015)

Freshman of the Week
Jane Donahue, Penn State
Charlotte, N.C. – Christ the King Catholic

• Earned three top-four finishes against No. 13 Virginia, including a first-place finish in the 200 IM (2:03.83), the fastest 200 IM by a Big Ten freshman this season
• Clocked 1:03.34 for a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke and finished fourth in the 200 breaststroke at 2:18.18
• Earns her first career Freshman of the Week award
• Last Penn State Freshman of the Week: Valerie Gruest Slowing (Nov. 23, 2016)
