As with day 1 where we saw both the women’s and men’s 50m backstroke Portuguese national records fall, so it was today, with the same swimmers re-writing their nation’s record books in the 100m distance of the same stroke discipline.

First, Ana Sofia Leite charged to the wall to finish in a swift 1:03.42 for the 100m backstroke win, which was just enough to narrowly surpass the previous national record of 1:03.45 held by Marta Vieira Marinho set back in 2010. Leite’s previous personal best was 1:03.53 registered last July.

Immediately in the men’s edition of the event, Pedro Oliveira fired off his own new national record, clocking a solid career-best 55.46 to knock just under a tenth off of his old national mark of 55.55 he set back in December 2014.

Another Portuguese record was nearly cleared, as Diana Duraes cranked out an impressive 4:19.75 400m freestyle time for the gold medal in the event.  This time matches exactly the existing national record set by Ana Goncalves in 2013.

The competition concludes tomorrow, April 4th with the 200m butterfly, 100m freestyle, 200m IM, 1500m/800m freestyles and the 400m medley relay events.

Pedro Oliveira is My hero. You should have seen him today. He even made the referee cry with is race. This guy is a true gentleman. Two national records today but the most memorable moment of the championships was the tears of joy in the referee’s face.
