Day Three Prelims

 

Bucknell women, Navy women and BU men were the biggest contributors to tonight’s final. Sixteen Bison swimmers and sixteen Mids are competing for individual points with entrants in every women’s event. The Terrier men will load up tonight’s finals session with twenty swimmers, the highest number of finalists among the ten Patriot League schools. Not far behind them, the Army Black Knights qualified eighteen swimmers.

Sophomore Courtney Patterson of Lehigh dropped 11 seconds off her entry time to lead the field of qualifiers in the 400 IM with 4:19.56. Amber McDonnell of Bucknell qualified second, and Colgate’s Megan Jex dropped 15 to earn her spot in lane 3. The League record is 4:15.63 (Caren Guyett, Colgate, 2009).

Three of the top four qualifiers in the men’s 500 came from Bucknell: Mike Nicholson (3:55.16), Louis Behnen, and Jack Robinson, qualifying 1-2-3. Tying for the third spot with Robinson was Navy’s Alex Nickell. The League record for the men is 3:49.75 (Justin Vagts, Navy, 2013).

Army snagged the top two spots in the women’s 100 fly and qualified three in all for the “A” final. Navy also had three of the top eight and Boston University had two. The three fastest times out of prelims were: Ariana Bullard (54.46) and Molly Mucciarone of Army, and Hannah Gillcrist of Navy. Gillcrist dropped nearly 4 seconds from her seed time to reach the “A” final. Kelly Carroll of Lehigh won a swim-off for 16th. and The League record is 53.58 (Toni Paruso, Navy, 2012).

Continuing to dominate the 100 butterfly “A” final, the Black Knights qualified four men, including junior Michael Dustin who is the top seed with a 48.67 prelims swim. Jonathan Debaugh of Navy and Ryan Bach of BU also finished in the top three. The League record is 47.33 (Adam Meyer, Navy, 2009).

Maddie Thompson of Navy had the fastest prelims time in the 200 free with 1:49.55. The next two qualifiers were Stephanie Nasson from BU and Carolyn Koch of Lehigh. Three Loyola swimmers dropped a combined total of nearly ten seconds to make the “B” final: Caitlin Cronin, Brianna Keelan, and Erin Calderoni. The League record is 1:46.17 (Tara Chapmon, Navy, 2010).

The men’s 200 free is going to be an exciting race tonight.  After top-seeded Thomas Duvall of Navy (1:36.96), the next six all qualified with 1:38s: Cole Puchi (BU), Andy Vazquez (BU), Christopher Szekely (Army), Hugh Davison (Navy), and Riley Mita (Navy). Erik Heinemann of Bucknell dropped 2.75 seconds to qualify 8th. The League record is 1:36.00 (Hugh Davison, Navy, 2013).

Navy’s Hannah Gillcrist was the fastest qualifier in the women’s 100 breat with 1:03.49. Her teammate Ellen Bradford was second, and Bucknell’s Ashley Henderson, third. Colgate’s Talia Fishbein dropped 3.2 to make the “B” final. The League record is 1:00.72 (Laura Gorinski, Navy, 2011).

Navy senior Sean Murphy crushed the meet record of 54.45 with his prelims swim of 52.96. Lafayette’s Greg Grewal dropped 2.2 seconds and qualified second, while Luke Hoffer of Navy was third. Two more big drops came from Army’s Nick Treiberg (-3.2) and from Curtis Hon of BU (-2.4), both of whom made the “B” final. The meet record is 52.88 (Sean Murphy, Navy, 2013).

Bucknell sophomore Emma Levendoski (54.42) ended the morning session with a meet record in the 100 back. The previous mark of 54.55 dated from 2010. Her teammate freshman Rachel Perry dropped nearly two seconds to qualify second. Navy’s Anna Brooks was third. A couple of big drops propelled swimmers into the “B” final: Meghan Shroyer of Colgate (-2.32) and Lizzie Mckenna of Loyola (-2.1). The League record is 54.27 (Emma Levendoski, Bucknell, 2013).

Bucknell and Navy each got three into the men’s 100 back “A” final, including a trio who broke the meet and League record of 48.34, set by Gage Trotter in 2012: new record-holder Joseph Lane of Navy (48.04), his teammate Brendan Walsh (48.12), and BU’s Connor Stuewe (48.23). Bryan Panaccione of Army won a swim-off for eighth place, adding a second Black Knight to the “A” final.

Finals begin at 6:00 p.m.
