At the 2018 VHSL (Virginia High School League) Class 5 State Meet, the Patrick Henry girls and Thomas Jefferson boys came away with team titles. There were 6 class 5 state records broken at the meet, one of which was an overall VHSL record.

The Patrick Henry girls 200 free relay team of Caroline Kulp, Kemper John, Cabell Whitlow, and Brooke Knisely sped to a new overall VHSL state record, finishing in 1:35.45. Kulp led off with a 23.32, followed by splits of 24.28, 24.02, and 23.83 respectively. The previous overall record was 1:35.51 from Oakton, a team which included Megan Byrnes. The Douglas Freeman team came in 2nd, also coming in under the class 5 record with their final time of 1:36.24, however, they never held the lead.

Caroline Kulp won the girls 200 free in a class 5 state record of 1:48.57. The previous record was 1:49.56 from 2016, and was held by Kulp. Kulp took the race out fast, splitting 24.84 on the first 50, then followed it up with splits of 27.55, 28.25, and 27.93 respectively. She also won the 500 free with a time of 4:50.39, just off her class 5 record of 4:49.14.

Brandon Hamblin, an Indiana recruit, won the 50 free in a new class 5 record of 20.27. He won the race by over half a second, and his time marks his 2nd fastest performance ever (best time 20.18). He was just off the overall VHSL record of 20.19. Anna Landon, one of a huge class of in-state Virginia Tech recruits, won the 50 free in a new class 5 record of 22.95. She was just off her lifetime best of 22.91, which she swam back in December. Landon also won the 100 free with a personal best of 50.87, narrowly missing the class 5 record of 50.79.

Noah Bowers smashed the class 5 record in the boys 100 back, throwing down a 48.04 to win by over 3 seconds. The previous record stood at 49.54, set by Frank Schubert in 2015. Bowers’ split were very tight, going out in 23.60, and coming back in 24.44. Freshman Mackenzie McConagha shattered the class 5 record in the girls 100 back, blasting a 54.41. She ran down Brooke Matthias (54.76), a Penn State recruit, on the final 50, posting a 27.68 to Matthias’ 28.18. McConagha also beat out Matthias in the 100 fly, posting a 53.75 to Matthias’ 54.43, and narrowly missing the class 5 record of 53.51. Just a freshman, McConagha is in excellent postion to take down the overall VHSL records of 52.27 and 52.46 in the 100 back and 100 fly respectively, both of which are held by Janet Hu.
