Over 100 Former NCAA Swimmers Storm the Olympics

University of Florida Graphic Designer and varsity swimmer Dan Wallace designed the above graphic, in honor of Florida’s huge Olympic swimming group.

Looking for a special rooting interest for this week’s swimming competition at the Olympics? Have a non-swimming friend who you’re looking to hook in to the fever? Below, we have a list compiled by SwimSwam contributors Reed Shimberg and Matt Salzberg, a pair of Tufts University graduates and two incredibly knowledgeable and passionate swimming historians.

The most stunning list was the University of Florida. Even we here at SwimSwam didn’t realize just how far their reach was, with 23 former swimmers competing at the Olympics.

Also, Edgar Crespo and Alejandro Gomez both swam for TCU. Gomez now trains in Gainesville but was TCU. Crespo from Panama and Gomez from Venezuela and of note that a certain GreggTroy is also a Horned Frog alum.

Somewhat of a disappointing list from a US investment perspective. Better to see more time, money and opportunity go to home grown kids.

Agree! Too many foreign athletes on full rides at US schools. It is time for a NCAA limit on foreign scholarship athletes. Time for these foreign countries to come up with a better system for their athletes to stay and train at home. I know this is a hot button topic and the New York Times just had an interesting article about it not to long ago.

How about increasing the number of scholarships, except the foreign swimmer’s home country national swimming organization has to pay for their scholarship? That way everyone can swim against the best and it doesn’t reduce scholarships to U.S. athletes. Only catch is that a swimmer from a poor country would not be able to pay.

Agreed…… no one wants to limit their training opportunities in the US. Just do it on your own dime.
