Olympic Star Nathan Adrian to Headline Edmond, OK Pro-Am

Swimming News is courtesy of American Energy Elite Pro-Am.

2012 London Olympic Gold Medalist, Nathan Adrian will be headlining a record-sized field of Pros at the 2014 OKC Pro-Am hosted in Edmond, Oklahoma on Dec 18th thru Dec. 21st. Adrian will be swimming the Pro maximum of 4 events: the 50, 100, 200 free and the 100 fly. Nathan is the fastest American ever in the 50yd (:18.6) and 100yd freestyles (:41.0).

Nathan almost broke his own records last year at the Fastest Man in Texas Shootout, winning $10,001 in just :18.7 seconds, and he was just off his own personal best in the 100yd free and Master Nationals in April. Pro-liason, Josh Davis commented, “To have Nathan in the OK 50 free Shootout format on Sat. Dec 20th will be very exciting. It takes 4 swims total to win the $5000, one in prelims and 3 races in finals. Whenever Nathan races short course he wows the crowd, just like he did in long course when he won gold in the 100 free in 2012. I saw it in Texas and at Masters Nationals in Santa Clara. He puts on a show. Having Nathan race in Edmond, OK, along with all the other Rio 2016 hopefuls will be awesome!”

The presence of Adrian and the rest of the pros is not just a chance for them to win big money, but also a chance for the club swimmers who sign up for the Edmond Pro-Am to race some of the best swimmers in the world.

Team registration begins today. For more information go to www.americanenergyswimclub.org

KMSC is a new team started by John B. And Kathy M. That’s why their swimmers were unattached for 120 days after leaving what is now AESC (American Energy) formally known as Chesapeake SC, and prior to that KERR-McGee Swim Club. KMSC is known as King Marlin swim club. You are correct John was the visionary behind the Elite Pro-Am but it was Kerr-McGee, Chesapeake who now goes by American Energy that has always hosted it.

@disappointed, i haven’t seen a list of teams that KMSC is bringing to their meet. Have they published the same thing you are accusing AESC of not doing?

How much are the Pro’s getting in appearance fees for this meet? Can’t be that they are all just coming in for free. Hotels and airline tickets, transportation and appearance fees must be costing a pretty penny for that many swimmers.(especially for Adrian who if he’s smart if following the Euro’s model and charging for appearance fees outside National competitions) Because not everyone is leaving with prize money. They have to actually win it first.
What is the cost that is being accrued by this team for 50+ Pro’s?
Quite a hefty sum for a new start up team…although guessing the oil company is footing the bill.
The meet better be well attended because promising the moon… Read more »

Justanopinion, this meet has been going on for years with a similar model. Additionally, the team may be a new iteration of Kerr-McGee Swim Club, but I’m not 100% sure. When the meet was held in Oklahoma City it was very well attended but I do think the oil company puts up money to get the big names there.

According to the club website, they’ve been around since 1956 under different names, so it’s not a new start up team.

Well, guess the issue is that the meet IS being well attended this year…the original one by the original team which is still holding the meet in Okla.City. Not sure how this team was able to keep the “history” claims, but it IS a start up team. KMSC (sound familiar??) is hosting the original Pro-Am still, like always at OCCC. Mission Viejo for example I’ve heard is bringing 70 swimmers to it this year, and teams from around the country are still coming in for it. Sounds like it’s going to have about 650-750 swimmers attending.
There was an ugly split last year and somehow this new team got to keep all the “naming rights”.
Guess throwing money… Read more »

I was really disappointed to see that this meet is being hosted by a different team. I coached at KMSC when John Brown dreamed up the idea of the Pro Am meet. I was there for the first fledgling years (mid 90’s) when he worked his butt off to get everything worked out and to get Olympians to fly to Oklahoma City in December. John was the visionary who got the whole thing going – and really pushed the idea of a meet where swimmers could win cash prizes. I’m so bummed that this meet has been stolen from it’s creator. 🙁

Disappointed – this meet is being hosted by the same team that it’s always been hosted by, the difference is that John Brown is now with a different team, and they are hosting a similar meet the same weekend.

@ Braden – I guess that depends on how you define the term “same team.” The team has gone through various name and sponsor changes. I will always consider the Elite Pro Am as John Brown’s meet. Being a native Californian that found herself in Oklahoma coaching with John in the 90’s – I remember the moment John told me about his idea to fly Olympians into Oklahoma City in the middle of December for a cash prize meet. At the time I thought he was nuts. Then he made it happen. He worked his butt off to make it happen (as did a bunch of former board members that are probably as disappointed as I am). This American Energy… Read more »

Short course yards? Shouldn’t these guys be preparing for long course world championships?

Racing is racing and there is money to be made while you have a lot of fun with some good people. If you are good you will always be ready. Swimmers should be more like track people and speed skaters.
