Old Dominion vs. William & Mary Duel Meet

The Old Dominion men topped William & Mary in a dual meet for the first time since 2013, while the William & Mary women won in lopsided fashion. For William & Mary, the meet was a final tuneup before the CAA Championships that begin on March 29th, while ODU has already completed their championship meets for the season. Despite competing in different conferences, the two schools enjoy a rivalry dating back to the mid-1900s, when ODU was founded as an extension school of William & Mary.

Men’s Meet Recap

ODU started the meet off strong on the men’s side with the team of Hugo Eriksson, Peter Durisin, Oskar Iwarsson, and Parker Harp winning the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:31.12.

W&M came back in the second event, the 1000 freestyle, with Conor Sokolowsky finishing first in 10:03.75.

After going back and forth on the first two events, ODU won three straight, with Noah Wilkins winning the 200 free (1:40.23), Jacob Cobb winning the 100 back (51.39), and Peter Durisin winning the 100 breast (54.69). Durisin’s swim came in record-breaking fashion, as the senior broke set the pool record in his final swim of the event at his home pool. He also added a second win later in the meet, besting the field in the 200 breast with a time of 2:03.25.

In the 200 fly it was freshman Gavin Lamoureux of W&M who posted the fastest time. Lamoureux narrowly edged out teammate Noah Fields by just .02, touching in 1:51.99.

ODU’s Parker Harp, who anchored the school’s 200 medley relay earlier in the meet, swept the sprint freestyle events by wide margins. In the 50 free, he won by nearly a second, finishing in 20.77, while in the 100 free he finished in 46.05.

Noah Wilkins, who earlier in the meet won the 200 free, picked up a second win in the 200 back. Wilkins finished almost three seconds ahead of the field, touching in 1:51.75.  That time put him just off of his lifetime best in the event, a 1:51.28 from 2018. He rounded out his day by winning his third individual event, the 100 fly, in 50.32. Wilkins was the 2021 CCSA champion in the 100 free and runner-up in the 50 free.

W&M’s Jake Kealy came away with the win in the 500 free, leading Jacob Cobb by almost 5 seconds to finish in 4:37.60. The pair would face off again later in the meet in the 200 IM, this time with Cobb getting the upper hand in a time of 1:54.41.

W&M came away with the final event win of the day, touching in 3:04.57 in the 400 free relay.

Women’s Meet Recap

W&M started the women’s meet with a win in the 200 medley relay and never looked back. The team of Anna Kenna, Annie Tuttle, Corinne Davenport, and Missy Cundiff finished in 1:42.42, over three seconds ahead of the runner-up ODU team. Cundiff would later pick up a pair of individual wins in the 50 free (22.71), and 100 fly (56.87).

Megan Bull finished first in the 1000 free, only 5 seconds back of the men’s champion in the event. The senior touched in 10:08.45. Bull was the 2020 CAA runner-up in both the 500 free and 200 breast.

Claiming two event wins for W&M on the day was Elizabeth Intihar. Intihar first won the 200 free in 1:50.20, just .06 ahead of teammate Katie Stevenson. She later added a strong win in the 500 free (4:54.65).

Kat Vanbourgondien and Annie Tuttle, both from W&M, swam the fastest times in the 100 back and 100 breast, respectively. Vanbourgondien touched in 56.67, while Tuttle finished in 1:03.72.

The top time in the 200 fly came from W&M senior Madeline High, who touched in 2:06.72.

Katie Stevenson won the 100 free for W&M by over a second, finishing in 51.01. She was also a part of the school’s winning 400 free relay that touched in 3:24.90.

ODU came away with wins in both the 200 back and 200 breast. In the back, it was Summer Sampson finishing with the fastest time of 2:03.43, while the breast went to Tara Enneking in 2:18.69.

The final individual event of the day went to ODU’s Katie Ellet, who edged out Annie Tuttle with a time of 2:07.80.
