Okada Wins 2 as UCLA Bruins Take Down ASU Sun Devils

The UCLA Bruins followed up their Friday win against Arizona with another home victory against Arizona State on Saturday. The freshmen continued to play a key role for the Bruins this weekend, helping the tem to a 162-131 victory.

Freshmen Kenisha Liu and Amy Okada combined to win 3 individual events to help their team to a second-straight home victory. Okada was a double event winner, sweeping the butterflies with her 54.92 in the 100 fly and 1:59.86 in the 200 fly. Liu, on the other hand, was the 200 free champ, clocking a 1:49.17 to outswim Arizona State’s Kat Simonovic (1:49.47).

The Arizona State sprint duo of Alysha Bush and Claire Fisch charged to top 3 finishes in both sprint free races while racing UCLA All-American Linnea Mack. In the 50 free, Bush took the win with a 22.79 ahead of Mack (23.00) and Fisch (23.40). A similar result in the 100 free saw Busch take her 2nd win of the day with a 50.12 in the 100 free, followed by Mack (50.17) and Fisch (50.64).

PRESS RELEASE – UCLA:

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The UCLA women’s swimming and diving teams completed the sweep of the Arizona schools on Saturday when they topped Arizona State, 162-131.  With the commanding win, the Bruins improve to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in Pac-12 competition.

Starting the meet off with a victory, the Bruin quartet of Linnea Mack, Sarah Kaunitz, Katie Grover, and Caroline McTaggart posted the top time in the 200 Medley Relay (1:42.00).  The UCLA B squad finished third with a 1:44.48.

The Bruins continued the streak by taking the first three individual events as well.  Katy Campbell nabbed the Bruins’ first individual win of the meet.  The redshirt senior swam a season-best 10:06.13 to finish first ahead of fellow Bruin Margaux Verger Gourson (10:07.60).  Next up, Kenisha Liu completed the sweep of the 200 Free over the Arizona schools.  The freshman swam a season-best 1:49.17 in the event.  Senior Madison White then recorded the top time in the 100 Back (54.78).

Continuing the Bruin freshmen dominance over the Arizona schools, Amy Okada won both the 100 and 200 Fly on Saturday.  After winning the 200 Fly on Friday, Okada posted a season-best 1:59.86 against the Wildcats to finish ahead of Grover, who clocked in at 2:01.69.  The freshman later took the 100 Fly with a 54.92.  Grover placed second with a 56.03.

The Bruins went 1-2 in the 500 Free for the second time in as many days.  After Michaela Merlihan and Campbell placed first and second, respectively, on Friday, the Bruins switched spots on Saturday against Arizona.  Campbell swam the top time of 4:55.68, finishing just ahead of Merlihan at 4:55.72.

On the boards, the Bruins went 1-2-3 in the 1-meter event.  Once again, Eloise Belanger posted the top score (304.43).  Ciara Monahan and Annika Lenz placed second and third, respectively.  Belanger and Lenz also went 1-2 in the 3-meter on Saturday.  Belanger scored a 321.38 to finish ahead of Lenz at 306.23.

Closing out the meet with the 400 Free Relay, the Bruin quartet of White, Mack, McTaggart, and Liu recorded the fastest time (3:21.90) in an exhibition swim.

PRESS RELEASE – ASU:

LOS ANGELES – Rounding out their time in the city of angels, the Sun Devil women’s swim team competed for the second consecutive day and, despite improvements from Friday’s meet, suffered a 162-131 loss to the No. 15 Bruins.

Marlies Ross captured the first Sun Devil win of the day in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.03) followed just behind by Kaya Philapil (1:04.23) in second. Ross would win her second event on the day in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.67) with Philapil in third.

Alysha Bush also won both sprint freestyle events while Claire Fisch rounded out the top three in each of the two events (50 and 100-yard free).

In the final individual event on the day, Ross won her third individual event of the meet followed by Chloe Isleta in the 200-yard IM as the duo went 1-2.

The Sun Devils have just over a week of practice between competitions until the Art Adamson Invitational in College Station, Texas (Nov. 17-19) to mark nearly the halfway point of the regular season.
