Ohio Celebrates Senior Day with 208-84 Win Over Youngstown State

ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio swimming and diving (5-2, 1-2 MAC) celebrated its seniors with a victory over Youngstown State (0-6, 0-2 HL), 208 – 84, this afternoon at the Ohio University Aquatic Center. The Bobcats recorded wins in 14 of the 16 swim events and recorded wins in both the 3-meter and 1-meter diving events.

“Really exciting to watch our seniors compete today,” said first-year head coach Mason Norman. “The team did a great job. We had the most energy we’ve had all season on the pool deck which translated over into fast swimming, matching our best times from in season all year. We are improving on those across the board which really sets us up nicely when we go to Akron but more importantly for MACs at the end of February.”

The first event was the 200-yard medley relay where the Bobcats swept the podium securing first, second and third place. The winning Bobcat team, comprised of freshman Athena Aravantinou (North Bethesda, Md.), senior Mackenzie Hornstra (Naperville, Ill.), senior Corrin Van Lanen (Green Bay, Wis.) and senior Lexi White (Waxhaw, N.C.) as anchor, finished with a time of 1:47.41. The second-place Bobcat team, comprised of freshman Kendra Sheehan (Columbus, Ohio), redshirt junior Emilia Lahtinen (Ylojarvi, Finland), senior Maddie Wyke (Columbus, Ind.), and junior Courtney Perrett (Durban, South Africa) as the anchor, finished with a time of 1:48.97.

Event number two was the 1000-yard freestyle where Ohio registered a first-place finish by sophomore Hannah Schlegel (Birdsboro, Pa.) with a time of 10:11.34, a second-place finish by sophomore Ana Henderson (Danville, Calif.) with a time of 10:19.78 and a third-place finish by junior Mackenzie Caruthers (Hilliard, Ohio) with a time of 10:26.92.

Next, Haschemeyer placed first for Ohio in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:54.44, while sophomore Katherine Garrity (Eagan, Minn.) and sophomore Samantha Glass (Villa Hills, Ky.) finished second and third with times of 1:54.90 and 1:58.89 respectively. The 100-yard backstroke event followed where the Bobcats registered a first-place finish by Aravantinou with a time of 57.77 and a second-place finish by Sheehan with a time of 1:00.52.

Ohio went on to win the next three events beginning with Lahtinen winning the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.53. Hornstra followed closely behind with a time of 1:05.85 for a second-place finish. Senior Emily Ortner (Concord, Calif.) finished third with a time of 1:06.87 for the Bobcats. Next, Glass secured first in the 200 yard-butterfly with a race time of 2:06.29 with Wyke following closely behind for a second-place finish with a time of 2:07.57. To conclude the three-event win streak headed into the 3-meter dive event, Van Lanen registered a win in the 50-yard freestyle event with a time of 24.02. White registered a third-place finish with a time of 24.88 for Ohio.

The first diving dual between Ohio and Youngstown State, the three-meter dive event, resulted in a first-place finish by freshman Taylor Miller (Latrobe, Pa.) with a score of 312.30, a second-place finish by senior Nicole Hughes (Euclid, Ohio) with a score of 306.44 and a third-place finish for redshirt-junior Olivia Dillon (Newcastle, Aus.) with a score of 298.50.

Back into the pool, White registered an event win in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.87. The 200-yard backstroke event followed where Aravantinou captured another first-place finish with a time 2:05.35. Haschemeyer finished second with a time of 2:07.92 and freshman Madeline Kenyon (Dayton, Ohio) finished fourth with a time of 2:13.61 for the Bobcats.

Next, Lahtinen secured another race win in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:20.04. Freshman Kelsey Morgan (Pickerington, Ohio) followed closely behind for a second-place finish with a time of 2:21.16 while Hornstra secured third-place with a time of 2:21.39.

The Bobcats secured first, second, third, fourth and fifth-place in the 500-yard freestyle event. Schlegel finished first with a time of 4:59.52, Garrity finished second with a time of 5:06.72, Caruthers finished third with a time of 5:07.61, Henderson finished fourth with a time of 5:08.39 and in fifth-place, with a time of 5:26.09, junior Katherine Redden (Fort Thomas, Ky.).

The 100-yard butterfly event followed and resulted in an event win for Sheehan with a time of 58.69 as the meet headed to the second diving event, the one-meter dive event. Wyke registered a third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.45 and senior Emily Davis (Lexington, Ky.) registered a fourth-place finish with a time of 59.98 for Ohio.

Dillon secured a first-place finish in the one-meter diving event with a score of 317.54 while Hughes secured a second-place finish with a score of 303.44 and Miller secured a third-place finish with a score of 263.93.

Glass went on to register the fastest Ohio time in the 200-yard IM event clocking in at 2:07.80 with Schlegel and Garrity following closely behind registering times of 2:08.22 and 2:10.36 respectively.

The meet concluded with a 200-yard freestyle relay. The winning Ohio team consisted of White, Ortner, Henderson and Van Lanen as the anchor, finished clocking in at 1:39.90.

“I want to thank the seniors for what they have done, really transitioning this program,” said Norman. “The future is bright because of those seniors and we are going to miss them but we still have work to do this season.”

The final box score was Ohio – 208, Youngstown State – 84.

UP NEXT
The Bobcats will travel to Akron, Ohio on Friday (Feb. 1) to face Mid-American Conference rival, Akron, in the final meet before the Women’s MAC Championships. The meet start time is to be determined.

Athens, Ohio – Sophomore Aida Jurinovics won the 200-yard IM to lead the Youngstown State women’s swimming and diving team at Ohio on Saturday at OU Aquatic Center.

Jurinovics took first place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:14.80. Jurinovics also had a third-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly clocking a time of 2:12.15.

In the 50-yard freestyle, sophomore Casey Prentice placed second with a time of 24.71 seconds. Prentice picked up a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.32 seconds.

In the 100-yard freestyle, Taylor Bishop was second with a time of 55.57 seconds. Bishop also finished fourth with a time of 25.17 seconds.

Freshman Hannah Olger was third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time 1:00.72. Freshman Averi McCarthy placed third in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:13.15.

Ohio won the dual by a score of 208-84.

The Penguins are in action on Sunday when they compete at the Butler Invitational. The meet is scheduled to begin at noon.
