Ohashi Remains Sole Definitive Worlds Qualifier Through Day 2 In JPN

2019 JAPAN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

IM queen Yui Ohashi solidified herself as the sole individual swimmer to have qualified to represent Japan this summer at the 2019 World Championships through day 2. After clearing the QT last night with a 2:10.51 semi swim, Ohashi took gold tonight in the 200m IM in a mark of 2:09.27.

Behind her was Rika Omoto, who also cleared that minimum mark in 2:09.91, but the 2nd qualifier isn’t a sure thing for the roster as of yet. We’ll identify these swimmers as ‘possible’ on our running list of qualifiers below.

The shocker tonight was the fact that Pan Pacs gold medalist and Asian Games multi-gold medalist Yasuhiro Koseki missed his individual qualifying mark in the 100m breast. He clocked 59.54 to fall short of what should have been an easily obtainable QT of 59.38. He has secured his medley relay spot with his outing, but will need to perform better at next month’s Japan Swim to snag that individual berth for Gwangju.

A refresher of the QTs per event is at the bottom of the article.

No changes in performances for Ohashi and Omoto since January (2:09.14, 2:09.93 respectively). Is this championships of low importance (in contrast with Chinese championships a week ago where we saw a plenty of very impressive results) or these two swimmers are facing no competition and the only concern is qualification time?

Ohashi did say she was disappointed. For Omoto that’s a new PB I believe.

….After clearing the QT last night with a 2:10.51 semi swim in the 2:10.51, Ohashi further dipped under the 2:10.97 minimum to book her spot on the JPN roster for Gwangju.

Behind her was Rika Omoto, who also cleared that minimum mark in 2:09.91,
Please, clarify times.

Yeah, they have a tendency to rush things here… Ohashi did 2:09.27, Omoto 2:09.91, Imai 2:10.61. QT was 2:10.97. Qualif requires QT + top 2 finish, so Ohashi and Omoto in, Imai out sadly.

Ridiculous times! Whats the reason? Low travel budget for the federation?

I don’t know what you’re talking about. All a male has to do to get an auto time in the 50 free is break the national record by half a second. Easy.

Why “possible” for Omoto? AFAICT she has it: she cleared the QT and finished in the top 2. Bummer for Imai, who also cleared but got 3rd…

BTW it’s Irie that is “possible”; he still needs to finish top 2 in the final.

No, that’s not how it works. For individual events, only the II time matters, and you’re in if (and only if) you clear it and finish in the top 2. Besides, if you think clearing the I time is required, why do you say Ohashi is certain, seeing as she didn’t clear it either?
