Oakville Takes Lead After Day Two of Canadian Nationals

The Oakville Aquatic Club has been experiencing some successes as of late, at the 2012 Summer National Championships and 2013 World Championship Trials the team finished second while last summer the club took the team title at the Canadian Age Group Championships. After two days of the 2013 National Championships the age group team from Oakville, Ontario has taken a substantial 130 point lead in the team standings.

Team Rankings after two days:

  1. Oakville Aquatic Club – 342
  2. Edmonton Keyano Swim Club – 212
  3. Cascade Swim Club – 198

On the second day of competition two junior age swimmers won individual events, which will book them a ticket to Dubai for the World Junior Championships. 16 year old Bryce Kwiecien-Delany of the Oakville Aquatic Club won the men’s 100 freestyle in a lifetime best of 51.34, nine one-hundredths of a second faster than what he recorded at the Canadian World Championship Trials in April. Kwiecien-Delany finished just ahead of two other junior athletes Stefan Milosevic of the Hyack Swim Club who posted a 51.46 and Mirando Jarry of the Club aquatique Montreal who finished in a time of 51.65.

17 year old Luke Reilly of the UBC Dolphins took the men’s 400 IM in a lifetime best of 4:21.07, beating his previous best of 4:21.07, which he recorded at the World Championship Trials in April. Evan White of the Oakville Aquatic Club, another 17 year old, finished second in a time of 4:23.54.

Three other swimmers qualified for spots on the roster of the World Junior Championships team posting the fastest times for a junior aged swimmer in an Olympic event. 16 year old Paige Kremer of the Olympians Swim Club finished third in the 100 freestyle in a time of 56.26, 16 year old Olivia Paskulin of the Pointe-Clare Swim Club finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:11.67 and 18 year old Antoine Bujold of Pointe-Clare Swim Club finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:03.16.

16 year old Sydney Pickrem of C.N. St Jerome, who qualified for the team in the 100 backstroke on the first night of competition, was the fastest junior swimmer and finished third in the 400 IM in a time of 4:48.84. Pickrem will add that to her schedule for Dubai.

Olympian Heather MacLean won her second event of the National Championships taking the 100 freestyle in a time of 56.14. Rachel Nichol of the Lethbridge Aquatic Club won the women’s 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:09.48, Nick Kostiuk of the Keyano Swim Club won the men’s 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:02.60 while Breanne Siwicki of the Manta Swim Club won the women’s 400 IM in a time of 4:47.70.

The Newmarket Stingrays took the top spot on the podium in both the women’s and men’s 50 backstroke. On the women’s side Danielle Hanus won in a time of 29.04 while Matthew Swanston won the men’s event in a time of 26.02.

Club aquatique Montreal won the women’s 4 x 200 freestyle relay in a time of 8:17.25 while the Cascade Swim Club won the men’s event in a time of 7:39.09.
