Oakland Men & Women Sweep UIC Flames At Home

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated league foe UIC Saturday from the Oakland Aquatic Center 186.5-113.5 and 202-98 respectively.

On the men’s side Oakland tallied 10 first place finishes and swam to the top spot in every relay on the day.

Mack Flowers continued to dominate in the pool, swimming to four first place finishes in the 50 free (20.94), 100 free (45.70), 100 fly (48.66) and 200 medley relay (1:31.38). Marko KhotyneskyiRudy Aguilar and Christian Bart accompanied Flowers on the winning medley relay team.

The women recorded 14 first place finishes on the day, including a sweep in the relay events.

Emily Aycock placed first in all three of her races including the 200 (1:53.89) and 500 (5:05.05) free, and the 400 free relay (3:28.36).  Teammates Katie ColwellKirstyn Abbasse and Susan LaGrand joined Aycock in the winning relay.

LaGrand tallied three additional first place finishes of her own in the 100 back (55.60), 100 fly (55.94) and the 200 medley relay (1:43.50).

Freshman Sohvi Nenonen had a great day in the pool, also tallying three first place finishes in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.27), 200 Breaststroke (2:21.12) and the 400 IM (4:27.05).

In Diving, Bernie Turchi defeated the defending Horizon League champion, UIC’s Cydney Liebenberg, finishing first in the 1-meter dive with a score of 240.59. Turchi dove to a second place finish in the 3-meter (245.55).

The Golden Grizzlies will continue competition on the women’s side Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. in a tri meet against Eastern Michigan and Florida Gulf Coast at Jones Natatorium in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Both the men and women will resume league competition on Saturday, Nov. 16 as Oakland welcomes Green Bay to the Oakland Aquatic Center beginning at 12 p.m.

A busy UIC swimming and diving team measured up against two powerful teams over the weekend.  They took on Michigan State Friday, and defending Horizon League champion Oakland Saturday.  Though the men and women both lost the dual meets to both rivals, Tim Loeffler was encouraged by his team’s performance.

“Our upperclassmen are really starting to swim the way we know they can and lead by example,” Loeffler said.  “We had a bunch of good times this weekend and in fact our distance swimmers on both sides and some of our men in other events have the fastest times in the conference this year.”

Andrew Lewarchick, Danny Sivak, Hunter Crook, and Cydney Liebenberg all won events in both meets.  The Flames men and women both improved their team scores from Friday to Saturday, and in fact each team posted a season high in the meet against Oakland.

Event Winners – Men

  • Kyle Lewarchick took top honors in the 200 IM Friday.
  • Andrew Lewarchick was the 1-meter diving winner in both meets.
  • Felix LaFortune took the 3-meter crown Friday.  Lewarchick won the event Saturday.
  • Danny Sivak won the 100 back by nearly two full seconds Friday.  He doubled up on Saturday in a much closer race, winning by a tenth of a second.
  • Hunter Crook was the 500 free winner at MSU and the 1000 free winner at Oakland.
  • Luke Hutchinson won the 200 fly against Oakland.

Top Performances – Men

  • Hunter Crook and Luke Hutchinson took second and third respectively in the 1000 free at MSU.
  • Jacob Cunningham, Michael Tegeler, and Josh Dellorto all finished in the top four in the 200 free versus the Spartans.  Cunningham was second in the event at Oakland.
  • Eric Weng was the fastest Flame in the 50 free.
  • Felix LaFortune grabbed second on the 1-meter board both days.  He was the 3-meter runner-up Saturday.  Lewarchick was right behind his teammate in second in the 3-meter event Friday.
  • Hutchinson and Cameron Moran both earned points as top-four finishers in the 100 fly.
  • Cunningham swam second in the 100 free in both meets.
  • Tegeler was second in the 200 back Saturday.
  • Kyle Lewarchick took second in the 500 free Friday.  He was second in the 200 fly and in the 400 IM Saturday.

Relays – Men

  • Sivak, Gabbey, Wiedoff, and Weng were nipped at the wall and took third in the 200 medley relay Friday.  Bryce Wyma replaced Weng in the anchor leg Saturday, when the team took second.
  • Sivak, Wiedoff, Cunningham, and Tegeler were the second place 200 free relay team at MSU.
  • Cunningham, Tegeler, Wiedoff, and Lewarchick swam second in the 400 free relay against Oakland.

Event Winners – Women

  • Cydney Liebenberg won the 3-meter dive by 34 points Friday.  Her score of 319.73 well surpassed the NCAA Zone standard.  She backed that up with a 36-point margin of victory Saturday and another zone qualification score.
  • Christina Neri was the 1000 free winner at Oakland.

Top Performances – Women

  • Distance free was a highlight for the Flames.  Ashton Amerman and Christina Neri went 2-3 in the 1000 and in the 500 at Michigan State.  Victoria Thor was second in the 1000, with Neri in third, at Oakland.
  • Victoria Thor was second in the 200 free Friday.  Misha Neal was fourth.  Thor turned in another second place race on Saturday, with Maddie Hammer and Neal right behind in third and fourth.
  • Beth Kelzer and Lauren Johnson were the Flames’ top finishers in the 50 free on Friday and Saturday respectively.
  • Lilly Culp placed second in the 200 IM Friday.  She led a trio of Flames, including Jessica Amyette and Becca Ballo, in places two through four in the 100 breast.  Amyette took third in the 100 and 200 breast at Oakland.
  • Culp was second in the 200 fly against Oakland.
  • Gabbie Werner and Emily Sullivan were third and fourth in the 100 fly at MSU.  Sullivan took second in the event at Oakland.
  • Liebenberg was second on the 1-meter board Friday.  Maya Molldrem was second Saturday, ahead of Liebenberg and Abby Hellinga.
  • Anna Scovill took second in the 100 back Saturday.

Relays – Women

  • Anna Scovill, Poleena Kovaleske, Culp, and Lauren Johnson took third in the 200 medley relay at MSU.  The team placed third in the 200 medley at Oakland.
  • Johnson, Kelzer, Kovaleske, and Werner finished second in the 200 free relay Friday.
  • Kovaleske, Johnson, Kelzer, and Scovill teamed to take third in the 400 free relay Saturday.

Up Next

  • The Flames will swim in their home opener Saturday.
  • Milwaukee will come south for a Horizon League dual meet starting at 11 am.
