Oakland has expanded both its men’s and women’s leads in the team standings on the second day of competition, with the men’s team pulling significantly ahead of the rest of the field. The Golden Grizzlies won 5 of the 10 events on Day 2, including both relays, and saw a total of 19 individual A final appearances.
Oakland swept the women’s and men’s 50 freestyles, with Katie Colwell taking the women’s race in 22.86, touching as the only swimmer in the field to break 23 seconds. Paul Huch swam a 19.80 to take the men’s 50 as the only swimmer to go sub-20. Colwell and Huch each anchored their respective 200 free relays at the end of the session as well. Colwell anchored the women’s 200 free relay in 22.29. She was joined by Karlee Marsh (23.91), Amber Lefler (22.98), and Kirstyne Abasse (23.76) for a final time of 1:32.94. Huch anchored the men’s relay to victory in 19.06, marking the fastest split in the field by far. Mack Flowers led that relay off in 20.67, and was followed by Joey Mangner (20.28) and Rudy Aguilar (20.14), clocking a final time of 1:20.15.
The Golden Grizzlies other win of the night came from freshman Colton Phelps, who posted a 1:47.79 to claim victory in the men’s 200 IM. Phelps was helped by early speed, hitting the 100 mark in 50.09, well over half a second faster than the next closest swimmer in the heat. CSU senior Molly McNamara was the women’s 200 IM winner, throwing down a pretty dominant win with a 2:01.21. She was out crazy-fast, hitting the 100 mark in 54.90, and held on to win the event by over 1.5 seconds.
IUPUI’s Meagan Ronci was victorious in the women’s 500 free, barely edging out UIC’s Lexi Joy after swimming stroke-for-stroke through the race. Ronci and Joy never hit a wall more than .23 seconds apart until the finish, and that .23 second gap came at the very first 50 wall. Ronci ultimately got her hand on the wall in 4:51.66 to Joy’s 4:51.97. Luke Hutchinson (UIC) was the men’s 500 champion, getting to the touch first in a tight field. Hutchinson came in at 4:27.43, while the 8th place finisher, Oakland’s Danylo Hrebelnyi, touched in 4:29.45. Hutchinson was able to pull away just a little at the end of the race, putting up a 25.63 split on the final 50.
