The international men’s breaststroke field just keeps getting faster.
Tonight in Riccione, 21-year-old Nicolo Martinenghi unloaded a lifetime best and new Italian record of 58.37 in the 100 breast, easily winning the Italian spring title. That lops over three-tenths off of his old best, which was also the old record, of 58.75.

When he went 58.75 in December 2019, he split 27.51 on the first 50 and 31.24 on the second, so he was over a tenth faster on both 50s tonight. His opening speed was especially notable, going over two-tenths faster than he did in 2019.
Martinenghi now ranks #1 in the world this year, unseating World Record-holder Adam Peaty of Great Britain from his 2020-21 season throne.

Looking at the historical rankings, this was a massive swim. Martinenghi becomes the third-fastest performer in history, behind only Peaty and Ilya Shymanovich of Belarus. His time moves him .06 ahead of the Netherlands’ Arno Kamminga, who went 58.43 in March 2020. Previously, Martinenghi’s 58.75 ranked him 12th all-time.

Not sure I see any US breaststroke medalists despite increasing depth of fast swims like 9 Big Ten swims under 52
57s breastroke swimmers are comming , it’s amazing how peaty’s perfomances have an impact on the other swimmers. Same as dressel in the 100 fly, now 51s seems casual
I agree with this. We often see this in our sport when someone breaks one of the time barriers, others then seem to follow.
I think McHugh might be a dark horse to throw down a 57 breast. He’s built similarly to Peaty (powerful) and has improved his 200 yard breast. I also think Michael Andrew could get there, he’s got so much speed.

Current state of US men’s 100 M Breast feels very similar to the state of US men’s 100 m Fly in the mid-late 90’s.

2021 olympics shaping up to be the fastest 100 breast heat in history by a solid margin. 58s everywhere! All of those top 4 performers are in their primes. Zibei and Wilby also look good. I’m not sure if Cordes will be back in 58-mid again but I do think Michael Andrew Wilson could get there.

Cordes going 58 would be a miracle, considering he hasn’t broken 1:00 since 2018.
