Auburn’s Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace marked the fastest 100-yard freestyle that has ever been swum in prelims of the Women’s SEC Championships. Her time of 46.81 made her the first collegian under 47 (Natalie Coughlin had the old mark at 47.00), and also broke Coughlin’s U.S. Open (which is effectively the World Record in yards races) mark of 46.85. And that was only a prelims swim at the conference championships.

She swam her previous career-best of 47.44 back in December at the Georgia Invite. It’s been joked that Brett Hawke can turn just about anyone into a world-class freestyler, and Vanderpool-Wallace might be his most successful work yet.

Never before has a 47.94 100 freestyle-this was the time of the second-highest qualifier, Amanda Kendall of LSU, looked so pedestrian. Vanderpool-Wallace is undoubtedly the SEC swimmer of the meet, and is now on target for an NCAA Swimmer of the Year award too.

Bravo . . . and then some! I’m proudly sharing this with my 10-year old son who swims with the local club. Hopefully, this will inspire him to work even harder to become even better.
