New Lion: Penn State gets commitment from breaststroker Sam Petrini

The Penn State Nittany Lions brought in a verbal commitment from breaststroker Sam Petrini this weekend, continuing to build their solid young nucleus.

Petrini has been around the block with several different clubs, with swims registered under King Aquatic Club, Olympic Cascade Aquatics and Bellevue Swim Club over the past few years. He’s currently with Bellevue after competing for that club at Junior Nationals the past summer.

Petrini’s Top Times

  • 100 breast: 56.44
  • 200 breast: 2:02.45
  • 400 IM: 3:55.43

Petrini joins a Penn State squad that was highly-impressive at Big Tens, led by breakout star Shane Ryan. The Nittany Lions had one point-scorer in the breaststrokes last year, then-freshman Andrew Schuehler, who made the B final of the 100. Petrini should help that group earn more points down the road as Penn State tries to develop the depth to make a leap into the next tier of teams in the Big Ten after finishing 5th last year.
