Indiana hosted Evansville this afternoon for each team’s final meet ahead of their respective conference championships. The hosting Hoosiers beat out the Purple Aces, for the most part having their swimmers compete in non-primary events.
One exception to that was Singapore’s Gan Ching Hwee, who just joined the Hoosiers this month after graduating from high school in December. In her first SCY 1650, Ching Hwee posted an impressive 16:14.67, a time which is very likely to earn her an invite for NCAAs in March. Gan has a personal best of 16:33.54 in the LCM 1500, which, coincidentally, converts to 16:14.05.
Gan is looking to be an excellent pick-up for the Hoosiers, as she turned around and swam a 1:48.41 200 free approximately 12 minutes after finishing her mile. At the end of the meet, she split 23.66 on the 2nd leg of IU’s ‘D’ 200 free relay.
Van Mathias, who has been handling most of the breaststroke duties on IU’s medley relays this season, clocked a new flat-start personal best in the 100 breast today. Mathias won the event in 54.74. Shortly after, Mathias nearly posted another personal best, taking the men’s 50 free with a 20.21, just 0.16 seconds off his personal best from 2018.
Evansville picked up a win in the women’s 200 fly, where Maya Cunningham clocked a 2:07.66, pulling away from the rest of the field on the 2nd 100.
On the boards, IU’s Kristen Hayden broke the IU dual meet record for women’s 3-meter diving, racking up 399.38 points. Hayden has previously competed for both Michigan and Minnesota, and this is her first year competing at Indiana after sitting out the previous two years. Last month, Hayden won synchronized 3-meter at the 2021 USA Diving Winter National Championships last month, becoming the first black woman ever to win a USA Diving national title.

People here claim to have sympathy for women but then proceed to bring up lia Thomas-related “jokes” in every article related to womens swimming or shove the fact that men are faster that women in our faces and not have real constructive discussions about the women competing while the articles about mens swimming stay intact
I think more impressed with a 148 2 free 12 minutes after a mile like that….
