“I felt very welcomed as soon as I met my teammates and the coaches. The team is always striving for the best, both in academics and athletics. The legendary Olympic gold medalist coach Pablo Morales and coach Patrick believed in my potential. Can’t wait to be a Husker!!

#GoBigRed”

Venezuelan National Team member Carla Gonzalez Garcia has given her verbal commitment to the University of Nebraska for 2016-17. Gonzalez is the current 100 meter backstroke Junior National record-holder in Venezuela, having gone 1:03.68 to finish 13th overall at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto this past summer. Gonzalez also represented Venezuela internationally at the 2014 Pan-American Olympic Festival in Mexico, where she won silver in the 100 back and bronze in the 200 back.

In addition, for the past three years Gonzalez has been stateside, swimming for the Fort Worth Area Swim Team (FAST) under the direction of swim coach Ron Forrest and at James Martin High School (in Arlington, Texas), training with coach Jon Ivonen.

Gonzalez’ times include:

  SCY LCM
50 back 30.87
100 back 56.09 1:03.68
200 back 2:00.86 2:18.77
100 free 53.69 1:00.12
200 IM 2:24.26
400 IM 4:33.47 5:11.30

A Summer and Winter Junior National qualifier in the 100 and 200 backstrokes, Gonzalez competed at the Austin Grand Prix. She is a member of the 2014-15 USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team.

The Cornhuskers didn’t score in either the 100 or 200 back at 2015 B1G Championships. Gonzalez’ current short-course times in those events are hovering around the Nebraska all-time top-5 marks, so she should be able to come in and add value to the Huskers’ lineup from the outset of her collegiate career.
