NCSA Summer Champs Day 2: Kukurugya, Drabot Break Meet Records

2016 NCSA Summer Championships

Katie Drabot of Ozaukee Aquatics picked up her fifth gold medal in two days when she won the women’s 200 free on Wednesday. Drabot broke the meet record with 2:00.16, and finished 1.3 seconds ahead of runner-up Margaret Aroesty of Long Island Aquatic Club.

Aroesty crushed the next event, though, dropping a lifetime second-best 1:08.78 to win the 100 breast by nearly 3 seconds and lower her own meet record by 2/10.

Hannah Kukurugya scratched the final of the 200 free to concentrate on the 200 fly final. After setting the meet record in prelims with 2:13.34, Kukurugya clocked a 2:15.02 in finals to win by a body length.

In the men’s meet, Machine Aquatics’ Dylan Cudahy opened the night with a lifetime best in the 400 IM, dropping 3.2 seconds to win in 4:24.50. Rose Bowl Aquatics’ Trenton Julian barreled through the 100 fly in 57.34 and looked out of reach to the rest of the field with his 3 body-length lead heading into backstroke. But Cudahy narrowed the gap by a half-second in backstroke and blew past Julian in breaststroke, out-splitting him by 3.6 seconds. Cudahy also came home 1 second faster in the freestyle leg, and got the win 4:24.50 to 4:26.77. It was Julian’s best time by 3.6 seconds.

Keefer Barnum of Lakeside Swim Team claimed victory in the 100 breast, dropping under 1:04 for the first time with his winning 1:03.97. Barnum took it out quickly, leading by .3 at the 50, and never let up. Long Island Aquatic Club’s Ryan Brown came in second with 1:04.28.

15-year-old Jack Dolan of Rockwood Swim Club led the field in the men’s 100 back. Trailing BGC-N. Westchester Marlins’ Tyler Hill 27.99 to 28.13 at the 50, Dolan came back 3/10 faster to edge Hill, 57.29 to 57.46. It was Hill’s best performance by over 2 seconds, and it vaulted him to #62 on the all-time list for 15-16 boys.

Clovis Swim Club won the men’s 4×200 free relay by 2 seconds, with 7:45.48, thanks to the efforts of Matthew Elkington (1:55.93), Benjamin Forbes (1:56.66), Tom Schab (1:59.75), and Graham Hauss (1:53.14). Long Island Aquatic Club (Timothy Marski, Christopher Arena, Adam Kapusta, and Christian Sztolcman) was runner-up in 7:47.30. Third place went to Academy Bullets Swim Club (William Kamps, Spencer Walker, Horace Qiao, and Andrew Grever) with 7:49.34.
