NCSA 200 Breast Finalist Spencer Steward Commits To LSU

Club North Swimming’s Spencer Steward is set to be a Tiger next season, as he’s announced his verbal commitment to join the LSU men next fall. He’ll make the move to Louisiana after he graduates from Kearney High School at the end of this school year.

Steward was a 2-time championship finalist at last season’s Missouri Boys State Championships. There, he placed 7th in the 100 breast and 8th in the 200 IM. During the long course season, he went on to compete at the 2016 NCSA Summer Championships. There, he was a championship finalist in the 200 breast, finishing 7th in a personal best 2:23.67.

Steward’s Top Times:

Event Best time
100 breast 58.70
200 breast 2:04.76
100 fly 53.56
200 IM 1:56.69

At the end of this season, LSU will lose Garrett House and Silas Dejean, their 2 returning SEC breaststroke scorers, to graduation. However, Steward will still overlap with Harry Ackland and Michael Petras, who swam the breaststroke events at conference last season.

Though he’s primarily a breaststroker, we could also see Steward in the IM events. His training group for the 200 IM would include Will Arthur and Harrison Jones, who both competed in that race as freshmen at the 2016 SEC meet.
