NCHSAA 3A Champ Virginia Gilliland Commits to In-state Davidson

Virginia Gilliland of Greensboro, North Carolina, has verbally committed to Davidson College for the class of 2022. Gilliland is a senior at Western Guilford High School and she swims year-round for Greensboro Community YMCA.

“I chose Davidson College for its commitment to both academic and athletic excellence. I immediately noticed the sense of community on campus and the family atmosphere of the team. ‘Go Cats!!”

Gilliland has had an incredible high school career, going from not having qualified for JOs until the age of 12 to winning a North Carolina High School 3A state title in the 100 breast as a junior. She just wrapped up her final high school season with a third-place finish in the breaststroke (1:05.47) and a tenth in the 200 IM (2:11.06).

In club swimming with GCY, Gilliland is a 10-time YMCA National qualifier and a 3-time YMCA All-American. This past summer, she was selected amongst her peers for the prestigious YMCA National Leadership Development Camp. She holds the GCY team record for the 50 breast, as well as the fastest breaststroke split in the 200 medley relay (29.24), and has traded records in the 100 breast with teammates for several years.

Primarily a breaststroker, Gilliland excels across the board. Her top SCY times include:

  • 50 breast 29.24 (relay split)
  • 100 breast 1:05.07
  • 200 breast 2:25.58
  • 100 free 55.48
  • 200 free 1:58.40
  • 100 fly 1:00.49
  • 200 IM 2:11.06
  • 100 back 1:02.92
