NCAA Releases Pre-Selection List for Division III Championships

The NCAA has released the pre-selection lists for the 2016 NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships to be held Wednesday, March 16 through Saturday, March 19 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Below are the “pre-selection” lists, which will be used to make the cuts and get the meets under the maximum allowed entries.

A quick read of the pre-selection psych sheet tells us that this year’s meet should be even faster than last year when meet records fell in 10 of 13 invidivual and 2 of 5 relay events on the men’s side, and in one individual and one relay on the women’s side. Some of the more vulnerable records include:

Women

  • 100 breast (1:00.54) – The top seeds in the women’s 100 breast are within striking distance of the 2006 meet record: Sam Senczyszyn of Wisconsin-Eau Claire comes in with 1:00.90 and Emily Hyde of Amherst went 1:00.99 to break the NESCAC record.
  • 1650 free (16:21.44) – The only individual event to fall in 2015 is in danger of getting broken again this year, as DePauw’s Angela Newlon brings a 16:29.59.
  • 200 breast (2:12.83) – Once again, both Senczyszyn and Hyde should threaten the meet record; both are seeded with 2:12 lows (2:12.20 and 2:12.22, respectively).

Men

  • 500 free (4:20.60) – Both defending champion and current record-holder Andrew Greenhalgh of Johns Hopkins(4:23.00) and Emory’s Christian Baker (4:23.95) could scare the meet record, set in 2015.
  • 200 IM (1:46.23) – Andrew Wilson of Emory, who is taking the year off to train for Trials, set the mark last year, but Johns Hopkins’ Evan Holder, who placed third last year, comes in with 1:46.82.
  • 100 fly (47.10) – Reed Dalton of Washington-St. Louis set the meet record in 2015; this year he is one of three within striking distance of the mark: Mike Lanz of St. Thomas (with 47.97), Dalton (47.98), and Orion Martin of Rose-Hulman (48.00).
  • 200 free (1:36.63) – Holder (1:37.10), W&L’s Tommy Thetford (1:37.76), and Baker (1:37.99) have a shot at breaking one of the oldest DIII records on the books; the 200 free dates back to 1988. In addition, the next six seeds have all been under 1:39 (Ryan Fleming, Denison; Mark Hallman, PP; Joey Duronio, Kenyon; Stuart Hohm, Denison; Andrew Bauer, WPI; and Joe Brunk, Denison).
  • 100 back (47.03) – Current record-holder Benjamin Lin of Williams could lower his own meet mark, as he comes in seeded with 47.93.
  • 100 free (43.16) – Jesse Novak of Rowan (43.88) and Thetford (43.95) both have a legitimate shot at the 2012 meet record in the 100 free.

Some of the other names to pay attention to are Emma Waddell, Katherine Bennett and Megan Pierce of Williams, Emma Paulson of St. Thomas, Kirsten Nitz of Wheaton (IL), Sarah Conklin of Amherst, Abby Wilson of Kenyon, and Washington University’s Michael Lagieski.
