Navy Men, Women Jump to Early Lead on Day 1 of Patriot League Championships

The Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy jumped out to an early lead in both the women’s and men’s contests of the Patriot League Championships, winning all four relays on Day One with three new championship records.

Elizabeth Graeff (25.76), Lauren Barber (27.40), Hannah Briant (24.22) and Kenzie Margroum (22.63) got things started with a 1:40.01 victory in the 200 medley relay that lowered Colgate’s 2009 record by 1.11 seconds. Army West Point (Kelly Hamilton, Jess Fabrizio, Molly Mucciarone, and Bailey Smith) placed second in 1:42.10, just .78 ahead of Boston University’s Isabella Olivares, Erin Nabney, Julimar Avila, and Christy Wilde.

Barber (1:46.50 leadoff) and Magroum (1:47.22) were also part of the winning quartet in the 800 free relay, along with Casey Lawson (1:48.60) and Maddie Thompson (1:47.79). Navy broke the Patriot League and championship record (7:16.72) by 7.1 seconds, and the pool record by 3.5 seconds. Coming to the wall second was an exceptionally strong Lehigh team of Julianne Koch, Carolyn Koch, Courtney Patterson, and Courtney Ferreira (7:18.53). Third place went to BU’s Erin Nabney, Danielle Yoon, Mika Spencer, and Steph Nasson (7:20.06).

In the men’s meet, Navy opened the score with a 1:26.93 win in the 200 medley relay from David Carlson (2.84), Marlin Brutkiewicz (24.02), Jonathan Debaugh (20.66), and Michel Bundas (19.41). Army West Point (Josh Sembrano, Joe Daniels, Austin Kong, and Brandon McCredie) were runner-up in 1:28.99, while BU (Quinn Smith, Daniel Andronov, Edwin Angjeli, and Brian Habacivch) just edged Loyola of Maryland (Zeke Wolfgang, Ben Cono, Rich Mueller, and Ruslan Kopunek) and Bucknell (Chris Devlin, Sam Mackie, Triston Loux, and Steven Grune) for the third spot on the podium.

Navy’s Joseph Jaime (1:36.11), Noah Martin (1:35.30), Alex Nickell (1:35.30), and Thomas Duvall (1:35.10) broke the league, meet and pool records by 4.5 seconds with their 6:23.72. Bucknell placed second with a 15-second improvement from their seed time from Louis Behnen, Jack Robinson, Denver Freeman, and Devlin (6:32.82). Army West Point (Evin Rude, Devin McCall, Jay Yang, and Chris Szekely) rounded out the podium with 6:33.27. Lehigh (Jacob Moyar, Zach Tieke, Jake Hassel, and Justin White) dropped an impressive 20 seconds to come in fourth, just ahead of BU.
