Navy Dominates Double Dual Meet at Home

Old Dominion and East Carolina made their way to Annapolis this weekend for a double dual meet hosted by Navy.  The meet was the unplanned season opener for Old Dominion- whose competition was postponed last weekend due to the flooding on the East Coast.

Women’s Meet:

Two relays were contested at the meet. In the 200 Medley Relay, East Carolina took the win in a team of Taylor Hague, Megan Sellers, Anastasia Amoiroglou, and Logan Graumann (1:44.47). The Navy women won the 400 free relay with a group of Kenzie Margroum, Ally Warnimont, Annabel Tomes, and Maddie Thompson (3:27.65).
Old Dominion’s Raquel Couto took an early  win in the 1000 Free, beating the field by almost 5 seconds and touching in 10:22.98. This event win was followed by Navy taking wins in three back to back events. Maddie Thompson took the 200 free (1:52.02), the 100 back went to Kaitlyn O’Reilly (57.27) and Lauren Barber took the 100 breast (104.13).  Thompson also took an even win in the 100 free (51.72) and was part of the fastest 400 free relay.

East Carolina’s senior Bailie Monahan had three individual event wins in the 200 fly (2:01.26), 100 fly (56.42) and 200 IM (2:04.44). She also anchored the 5th place 400 yard “B” free relay.

The women for Navy swept both of their dual meets. Head coach John Morrison said in a press release, “We had a lot of big efforts all across the board. The team is showing a lot of spunk for this time of year. They are getting up and racing hard, which is what they do every day in practice.”

To start the meet out, the Navy men took a commanding lead in the 200 medley relay, touching almost 2 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. They did this with a team of: David Carlson, Marlin Brutkiewicz, Jonathan Debaugh,  and Michael Bundas (1:30.45). The second relay of the day, the 400 free, went to East Carolina’s Victor Martins Dos Santos, Shawn Hunter, Michael Dugan,  and Trevor Irish (3:03.80).

The East Carolina Pirates were led by Fran Krznaric  and Matt Mullen. In addition to his relay victory, senior Dungan had three individual top three finishes (200 free, 100 free, 500 free).

The Navy men, who convincingly won both of their dual meets, took event victories in 13 events. Most notably, senior Alex Nickell took first in the 1000 free (9:31.74) and the 500 free (4:35.51). He was joined by fellow senior Carlson, who won the 100 back (50.52) and 200 back (1:51.30). Finally, junior Brutkiewicz swept the breaststroke events in 55.75 and 2:201.82, respectively.

Old Dominion had event wins in the 100 free with Vitor Sa touching in 46.04 and the 100 fly with Reed Mathews 49.38

On the horizon, both the men’s and women’s teams from Navy will travel to Baltimore on  10/16 to face off against UMBC. The East Carolina Pirates return to action on  10/23 against UNC-Wilmington. Finally, Old Dominion is scheduled to travel to Davidson for a tri meet against Davidson and Marshall over Halloween weekend.
