National Jr. Teamer Lindsay Looney Announces Verbal to Arizona State

Lindsay Looney, a junior at Denison High School in Denison, Texas, has announced that she has verbally committed to swim for Arizona State University beginning in the fall of 2019. She will join future Sun Devil teammates Claire Nguyen and Riley Lexvold in the class of 2023.

“Incredibly excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and pursue my academic career at Arizona State University!!! I’m thrilled for the opportunity to be a part of @sundevilswimdive #forksup
The coaching staff and team at ASU Swim & Dive are building a program to which I can’t wait to contribute. Big things are happening! Choosing ASU, I know I will receive outstanding career development in and out of the pool.”

A USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and NISCA All-American, Looney won the 200 IM for the third time and the 100 fly for the second time (she was runner-up as a freshman) at the 2018 UIL 5A State Swimming and Diving Championships. Her 100 fly time (54.40) broke the 5A state record.

Looney swims year-round for Metroplex Aquatics. She won the 400 IM at the 2017 Summer Junior Nationals, was runner-up in the 200 fly, took fourth in the 200 IM, and placed 9th in the 100 fly. Her performances earned her a spot on the Team USA squad for the final two stops of the 2017 FINA World Cup circuit.

Looney has been a tad more successful in long course meters than in short course yards, but she still brings impressive times to the Sun Devils.

Top SCY times:

  • 200 fly – 1:57.87
  • 100 fly – 54.40
  • 400 IM – 4:16.98
  • 200 IM – 2:00.54
  • 200 free – 1:48.43
  • 100 free – 50.81
  • 50 free – 23.07

Yes, really! The women’s team who finished 3rd behind Stanford and Cal at this year’s PAC-12 Championships! The same team that beat UofA after 25 years, and UCLA since 2011. The same team that beat USC at PAC-12 Championships!!! The same team who finished 23rd at NCAAs and only graduated one (1) senior this year!

Next season, this team will have Cierra Runge and Ruby Martin, just to name a few, who will add so much depth and points to this young team. So…yes, really!!!

Way to Go Lindsay, ASU coaching staff and team!!!

Nah! Just an FYI: Heard through the grapevine that ASU’s Chemistry Department has developed a substance that you no doubt haven’t heard of before. It’s called “Sun Block”! Very effective substance to diminish getting a sunburn ☀️
