Murez Advances To 100 Free Semis In Swim-Off, Lowers Israeli Record

After tying for 16th in the women’s 100 free prelims in a time of 54.49, Israel’s Andrea Murez and the Netherlands’ Maud van der Meer raced a swim-off to determine who would advance to the semi-finals.

Both out slower at the 50 than they were in the heats, Murez stormed back almost half a second faster to win and advance to the semis in a time of 54.20. van der Meer actually equalled her prelim swim identically in 54.49.

Murez lowers her Israeli national record of 54.40 set in 2015 with that swim.

This is van der Meer’s only individual event, while Murez also competed in the 200 freestyle where she finished 22nd. However, van der Meer did swim on the Dutch 400 free relay, splitting 53.77 as they won the bronze medal.

At the top of the field, Sarah Sjostrom leads the way in 53.01, with all three sprint free Olympic gold medalists from last summer, Pernille BlumeSimone Manuel and Penny Oleksiak 2nd through 4th in 53.1.
