But that wasn’t all; Menke scored new PBs in the 50/100/200/400/800 free, 200 back, 100 fly, and 200/400 IM as well.

She, too, earned her first U.S. Open cut with a best-by-6/10 1:01.83 to win the 100 breast. Murphy broke the Section record with her swim and was 1.2 seconds ahead of last year’s pace. She also took second in the 200 IM with a PB of 2:02.17.

Hayden Cornellison, 17, Pacific Swim: 200y IM (1:52.55) – Representing Great Oak High School at the CIF-Southern Section Division II Championships, Cornellison went a best time by 3.1 seconds and finished fifth, beating his time from May of 2016 by 4.7 seconds. He also placed third in the 100 back, dropping 2 seconds and earning his first Summer Juniors cut in the event.

Reminder: The Weekly Wonders column is a celebration of age-group swimming, where new champions are made every day. Anyone can look up the top swims of the week. That’s not what we’re doing here. If we were only reporting on the week’s top swims we would feature the same handful of athletes every Wednesday. Instead, this is an opportunity to introduce the swimming community to athletes who have made great strides in the context of their own particular swimming worlds. By association, it also celebrates their coaches and their teams. The Weekly Wonders column, therefore, amounts to a pat on the back for a job well done, and hopefully encourages swimmers of all levels to continue to reach from within to get to that next level.
