MIT Demolishes Springfield in Opening Dual Meet

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – In their first dual meet of the season, the MIT men’s swimming and diving team earned an impressive 229-71 victory over Springfield College on Saturday afternoon in the Art Linkletter Natatorium. Competing in 16 events, the Cardinal and Gray earned 14 first place performances.

MIT’s 400 Yard Medley Relay team – made up of seniors Ben Bauchwitz(Hershey, Pa.) and Austin Fathman (Hamilton, Mich.), and juniors Alex Lednev (Glenmont, N.Y) and Sean Corcoran (Huntersville, N.C.) – collaborated for a first place performance with a time of 2.14.18. Tech’s momentum continued with a sweep of the 1000 Yard Freestyle as freshman Scott Mayberry(The Woodlands, Texas) finished first among the six swimmers, followed by sophomore John Matthews (Yorktown, Va.) and freshman Parker Greene(Scottsdale, Ariz.).

As the meet progressed, the Engineers also swept the 200 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Butterfly, 100 Yard Backstroke, 100 Yard Breaststroke, and 50 Yard Freestyle. Springfield, which finished first in two events, halted MIT’s momentum in the 3 Meter Diving competition with senior Jack Lewis (Durham, N.H.), who earned a score of 302.70. Sophomore Harry Lubowe (Laguna Hills, Calif.) rounded out the top three with a score of 237.01.

Fathman helped MIT claim first place in the next event, the 100 Yard Freestyle with a final time of 45.95. Senior Brendon Chiu (Monterey Park, Calif.) finished second with a time of 48.11, followed by freshman Dane Erickson (Naples, Fla.). Fathman narrowly missed the NCAA B provisional qualifying standards and he is currently ranked third in the country in both events. MIT captured either first or second during the remaining events, however, Springfield’s final top finish occurred during the 1 Meter Diving as Lewis once again finished with a score of 283.35. Freshman Brian Huang (Potomac, Md.) placed third in the same event with a score of 218.34.

Senior Michael Everett (Ann Arbor, Mich.), classmate Fathman, and Erickson and Mayberry capped the meet with a strong performance in the 400 Yard Freestyle, claiming first place with a time of 3.10.56. MIT junior Michael Chen (Warrington, Pa.), Greene and freshmen Travis Libsack (Freeport, Maine) andJackson Graves (Huntsville, Ala.) finished roughly 12 seconds behind the first team with a time of 3.22.84.

MIT returns to the pool on November 22 when they host Babson College and Bowdoin College at 1:00 p.m.
