Mireia Belmonte Scratches Two Major June Meets Due to Shoulder Injuries

With the first weekend of the Mare Nostrum tour approaching in Canet-en-Roussillon, Mireia Belmonte and her coach have announced that she will be scratching the Mare Nostrum Tour, as well as the 2015 Sette Colli Trophy in Rome on June 12th and 13th. This is the second year in a row Belmonte scratched from the Mare Nostrum tour, although last year’s scratch was due to bronchitis.

Her coach, Fred Vergnoux, told SwimVortex.com that she experience some shoulder pain in May, and are now taking precautionary measures to avoid a bigger setback.

“Nothing major but a set back in May. She is training better and better week after week but still not 100% … not great timing.” – Vergnoux to SwimVortex.com

Even with Belmonte out of the Mare Nostrum, Spain will still have 16 other swimmers competing this weekend. The timing of this injury is critical with the World Championships approaching at the end of the summer. Spain will be relying on Belmonte in Russia after winning 2 silver medals and a bronze at the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona.
