MANKATO, Minn. — The Minnesota State women’s swimming and diving team opened its season with a dual victory over the University of South Dakota by the score of 151.5-148.5.

The Mavericks took first place in nine of the 14 events, including both relay events. This is MSU’s first dual victory vs. USD since the 2013-14 season when the Mavericks bested the Coyotes 152.5-147.5.

MSU took first place in the 200 medley relay event as the quartet of sophomores Anja Enervold, Emily Goodman and Katie Streiff, and senior Maggie Knier, posted a time of 1:47.40. The Mavericks also took first place in the 200 freestyle relay as the team of Knier, sophomore Nikki Ault, Enervold and sophomore Grace Gavronski turned in a time of 1:38.13.

Knier added two first place finishes in individual events as well as she posted a time of 24.64 in the 50 freestyle and a time of 54.16 in the 100 freestyle. Kayla Rinderknecht added a first place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:57.73) and a second place finish in the 100 backstroke (59.57) also.

Streiff and Goodman also won an individual event to go along with their exploits in the 200 medley relay. Streiff won the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.77, while Goodman finished the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:23.74. Goodman also took second place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.52.

Freshman Nicole Beckman won an individual event in her Maverick debut as well as she posted a time of 2:14.91 in the 200 butterfly. Junior Emelia Selky won the 1,000 freestyle event with a time of 10:59.38 also.

Freshman Ayla Taylor took second place in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 234.00, while senior Jaycie Klein finished fourth in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 204.25.

Minnesota State returns to action on Friday, Oct. 11, as they host the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs. The dual is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.

MANKATO, Minn. – South Dakota senior Sabrina Sabadeanu won three events as the women’s swimming and diving team opened its season with a narrow dual meet loss to Minnesota State, 151.5 to 148.5, on Friday.

Sabadeanu captured individual race victories in the 100 back (58.86), 200 back (2:06.89) and the 200 IM (2:10.70) for a Coyotes team that won seven events total in the dual.

Haley Pederson, a junior, swept the diving events, scoring 249.55 points in the one-meter competition and 254.4 points in the three-meter competition.

A pair of freshman got their collegiate careers off to a strong start with individual victories as Taylor Rau won the 100 breast (1:06.44) and Maria Mattaini triumphed in the 500 free (5:18.21).

Emily Johnson, a freshman, posted a pair of runner-up finishes in the 200 free (1:59.24) and the 100 free (54.51) while Lucie Anderson finished second to Sabadeanu in the 200 back (2:07.82) and third in the 100 back (1:01.10). More second-place finishes came from Hannah Aitkin in the 1000 free (11:06.86), Rau in the 200 breast (2:26.44), Teagan Haberkorn in the 500 free (5:12.62), Madilyn Sindelar in the 100 fly (59.19) and Naomi Bingham in three-meter diving (216.3).

Third-place efforts came from Jordyn Thielbar in the 1000 free (11:25.77), Haberkorn in the 200 free (2:00.78), Meghan Atwell in the 100 breast (1:07.98), Maren Iverson in the 200 fly (2:19.12), Isabel Fairbanks in the 200 breast (2:30.62) and Sydney Fulton in the three-meter diving competition (214.95).
