Maggie MacNeil‘s 49.57 in the 100 yard fly at a last-minute Michigan intrasquad in October is the 4th-fastest swim in the history of the race, but for NCAA purposes that swim didn’t count. That’s because the two other teams scheduled for that meet, Virginia and Tennessee, withdrew from the meet, and NCAA rules require multiple teams be in attendance for times to count.
There are no such concerns for MacNeil’s swim in the 100 fly final on Friday at the Minnesota Invite, where she swam a 49.26, which ties as the fastest 100 yard fly in history.
The time ties Louise Hansson’s time from last year’s NCAA Championship meet as both the NCAA Record and the U.S. Open Record – which is the fastest time swum on American soil by a swimmer of any nationality. Given that yards races are almost exclusively American these days, U.S. Open Records are in essence the best time ever.
Hansson, who is Swedish and a senior at USC, and MacNeil will match up at the NCAA Championships in the event this year. Kelsi Worrell still holds the American Record in the event in 49.43, because MacNeil is Canadian.
This summer, in long course, MacNeil became the #2 performer in the history of the 100 fly in long course when she upset Sarah Sjostrom in the event to win the World Championship.
The possibilities of TWO swimmers under 49 100 fly and another 20 point 50 free are making NC’s sound very exciting and we’re still four months away 👀👀👀

I wouldn’t discount Hansson in this, she’s a pretty huge taper swimmer.
Brown may not even swim the 100 fly at NCAAs! 1:41 in yards a few weeks ago and 1:57 tonight at US Open. Talk about range!
Agreed. At this point, I think 200 free is a lot more open. Only serious competition is Weitzel and her 200 free is her weakest event, not that that means much.
With 12 days between NCAA and Trials MacNeil will probably not be full rested for NCAAs. Prediction 48.4 and 55.7
Looks like she’s going 48 in March
I’m more interested if there’s a 54 at the end of July.
