Michigan Secures Verbal from 2x State Champion Sprinter Claire Newman

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Freeland, Michigan’s Claire Newman has announced her intention to swim at the University of Michigan in 2020-21. The Dow High School senior will join fellow verbal commits Casey Chung, Claire Donan, Claire Tuttle, Kalli Fama, Kathryn Ackerman, Noelle Kaufmann, Quinn Schaedler, Sophie Housey, and Sophia Tuineman in the class of 2024. Newman wrote on social media:

“I committed! To everyone I’ve met along the way and those who’ve supported me from the beginning: thank you! Special shout-out to The One who makes all things possible ✝️”

A USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and NISCA All-American, Newman won the 50 free (23.08) and 100 free (51.19) at 2018 MHSAA Division Il Girls Championship last November. She also split a 22.91 on the end of the Midland Dow medley relay and a 50.68 in the middle of the 400 free relay.

Newman also won a state title in club swimming, where she represents Midland Dolphins, when she notched a 23.06 in the 50 free at this spring’s LSC Short Course Senior Championships. She was runner-up in the 100 free (50.32) and took 11th in the 200 free (1:52.60). All three times were personal bests. She also competed in the 50 free at 2018 Winter Juniors East. Newman wrapped up her 2019 LCM season with lifetime bests in the 50m free (29.84), 100m free (58.06), and 200m free (2:10.54) at Cleveland Sectionals.

The Wolverines had six sub-23 sprinters on the 2018-19 roster, including then-freshman Maggie MacNeil and senior Catie DeLoof who scored in the A and B finals of the 50 free at NCAA Championships. Michigan’s 200 free relay (MacNeil, DeLoof, senior Siobhan Haughey, and sophomore Daria Pyshnenko) were runners-up to Cal at NCAAs with splits of 21.57, 21.59, 21.44 and 21.65, respectively. Haughey and DeLoof were both A finalists in the 100 free and in the 200 free.

Newman would have scored in the C finals of the 50 free at 100 free at 2019 B1G Championships.
